Ambiguously brown as in "you can't immediately tell what race he is?" I hope that's how you're using that.

I assume they mean that if someone were assigning snap racial categorizations of people, he might give them pause due to some of his features.

Uh, he is not even that tan. He just has hooded eyes and a mouth that some people associate with non-whiteness.
