Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
I'm saying that I don't think he's answering the question everyone seems to believe he's answering. As far as I can tell, people seem to be understanding the quote as: Toews got asked a question about Kane and he said 'you support your teammate because hockey is more important than rape'

Whereas I'm seeing: Toews got asked a question about the media and he said 'we always stick together vs the media/rumors, no matter what they are.'

It's a subtle difference and I don't think he clarified the distinction very well at all. Maybe I'm not clarifying the distinction very well either. But this lack of clarification is a huge problem. So in my understanding he's clearly guilty of buying into rape culture and trivializing the allegation (while being in a position of authority, which is a whole issue in and of itself), but not necessarily of supporting Kane.

That said, if he clarifies this later and restates his support of Kane, I immediately retract this benefit of the doubt and he can go die in a trash heap alongside Kane.

The question he was asked referenced the Kane case and then said, 'when something like that happens during the off-season...' The question may not have been explicitly about Kane but it really essentially was, you can't simply divorce it or the response from the context of what is happening right now.

Toews also brings up last years problems with the media as proof they've dealt with 'situations like that before', making it clear he is referencing the current Kane situation, and says the response is 'no matter what' to support your teammate and stick together.

If you accept that he is trivialising the accusation then you accept he is talking about the Kane situation, so why would him saying 'you support your teammate' not be a show of support for Kane? No offense but your interpretation reads as wilful ignorance to me.

I'm divorcing the two because my understanding of the quote is that the majority of his comments were attempting to steer the conversation away from Kane and back into 'safe' territory of the team response to media in general. When he says 'situations like that' he's obviously referring to the rumors (which there have been numerous ones about Sharp cheating). And from that example onwards, everything is a generalization about how the team always bands together.

But I do agree that there are huge problems with the fact that he lumped the allegation with rumors as if they were equal in the first place. However, I think when he added 'for the time being,' he indicated that maybe if the context changes (for example if Kane was charged) then they would acknowledge it and change the party line.

And as I said previously, if I am indeed understanding this wrong and he's supporting Kane, then he's garbage.
