But I don't think this is an outright endorsement like the Avs saying how they think Varlamov is a great guy,

Not all of the Avs reacted that way, though. Duchene and Parenteau did, but their captain did exactly what Toews should have done and gave a very strong "no comment, I'll only talk about hockey" statement. That's not too much to expect from a hockey player so all this talk about how this is just what hockey players are like, this is the culture kind of relieves Toews etc. of accountability. It's not too much to expect no comment, Landeskog proved that.

As did all the Kings in that reddit comment linked elsewhere. Basically, they all said "It's for the legal system to decide, I don't have anything else to say on that."

Right! I think "no comment" in this kind of scenario is the rule, not the exception. Toews is being the exception, so saying that's completely on the culture of the sport cuts him way too much slack. Two other captains handled this better than the best captain in the league, and that's really unfortunate for the people that look up to Toews and hold him to a high standard.

Yeah, and I think it was Stoll, that stated outright that they agreed with the decision to suspend him, and agreed with the decision to arrest him. Quite a swing away from "you stay together as a team and you support your teammate".

There is a difference between public reactions to Voynov/Stoll and reactions to Kane, though. They had both already been arrested and charged. Kane has been neither.

Yes, but this was after there was an arrest and the police report about her injuries was out. Anyone on the team who publicly disagreed with the arrest/suspension would have been viewed as absolute monsters. Before the arrest, they skated with him against the rules of the suspension.

In Kane's case, though we all know the general details, there haven't been charges. I would hope that if that does finally happen, the Blackhawks would also agree.

Surely the skating thing is on the organisation, not the individual players? And none of the players made any comments in support of Voynov at any point in the proceedings.

I'm at fault then, for generalizing, and I apologize. And I don't think Toews handled this the right way, either. I was just trying to express that I don't think his comment was saying quite what people are understanding it as.

That said, I could be totally in the wrong and he may believe in Kane 100%, in which case I'd condemn him completely.

Landeskog didn't just no-comment though.

Colorado captain Gabriel Landeskog said he and his teammates supported Varlamov.

"He's a teammate, and just like any teammate we support all our teammates," he said. "It doesn't matter what they go through."

Re: Patrick Kane

iirc Landeskog also posted some anti-violence against women stuff on his twitter as soon as the off-season started
