#11 - Kopitar Prefers Amps That Go to Eleven

More fun Ovi things today. A quick story from Ovi's sophomore year from @NHLHistoryGirl

"Nickname?" a Capitals employee asked Alex as the team lined up for preseason processing.

"Ovie," he said.

"Any other nicknames?" she asked, scribbling on her clipboard.

"Sex Bomb," he said with a straight face, then waited for her to look up from her clipboard before laughing.

That is an excellent article Anon. Thanks for sharing. It's also one I've never seen before. The fact that he's broken his nose 4 times was surprising though I'm curious to know if all the breaks are hockey related or not.

I knew about his nose being broken four times (yes, all hockey related), I just didn't realize they'd all already happened by that early time in his career. I do believe at that point he still had all his teeth. The iconic Ovi missing tooth happened in the season he's preparing for in this article.

Your article made me like Ovi a lot more but love his family. They seem weirdly loving yet hyper-competitive. Tatiana sounds both awesome and like Ovi is the toned-down version of her.

The stuff about Tatiana is fascinating! I knew the basics, but not how she fell in love with basketball or the details of how hard she worked or how it was all rooted in a determination to never be weak again. She's a formidable and fascinating woman. And I liked reading about how she protected Ovi from the more cutthroat aspects of the business when he was still a teenager. Wise choice of agent, dude!

I also saw some of Mikhail in Ovi, in the sentence about why Tatiana fell for Mikhail. Something about being outgoing and kind, I think? I was like aww, he is so a product of his parents.

The Capitals offered the season ticket holders the choice of a stick signed by Alex or by goalie Kolzig. Most opted for Alex's autograph. "Poor kid's arm is going to be broke," a team official said, shaking his head, as he passed by.

"I have to do it because fans must come to watch our game," Alex said earnestly.
