Is anyone else basically leaving hockey fandom because of this situation and now the team supporting him? It's so upsetting and horrific.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
aw don't do that. Don't let Kane's actions dictate your enjoyment of this sport and fandom.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
You do you, non. Fandom will be a little less bright every time someone leaves, but do what you need to do for you.

Personally, I was never really invested in the Hawks. They're only 1/30 teams, after all. I still love my team.

Re: Patrick Kane

I'm going back and forth.... Some days I think that I never really cared about the hawks in fic and I actually hate them irl so I'm ok. Other days I'm too acutely aware that this is a microcosm of how probably all the teams and most of the players would be if they were in the same situation. I'm going to finish the epic fic I'm writing right now (its about retired players, so they're slightly less likely to suddenly break my heart in this way). Then, I'm going to look at how bad the team is being and if there are still prompts going up on the kink meme briefly that make me feel sick to my stomach. And probably stop reading fic and go back to fictional fandoms. Honestly, as a lurker in this fandom I think I'd miss meme the most.

I'm still on the fence about it. For me, it wouldn't be as huge a loss because I've only been into the sport and the fandom for less than a year. But I really like some of the people I've met here, and I'm running a fun blog that I love, and hockey actually gives me and my dad something to bond over (My great-grandpa was a Hawks fan, my dad and grandpa are both Hawks fans, we all went to our first game together this spring during the playoffs). But I don't know if I can stay in a fandom that's making me sad at least as often as it's making me happy right now.

Re: Patrick Kane

That would be me. I was a huge Hawks fan. Now the thought of watching them makes me feel sick.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
I'm naive, I didn't think the team would openly ? support him. K/T was my fav for a long time. Now they both make me feel sick.

No, this isn't surprising to me at all. I thought about whether I was up to it before deciding to get into hockey fandom. There is no sport that doesn't have rape or domestic violence or sexual harrassment incidents every few years. I have in the past had to bow out of following sports for a few years, so I understand the urge. I prepared myself for this ahead of time.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
No, I'm honestly more a fan of watching the games than I am of any of the players, and, very honestly, none of this has surprised me at all. I knew coming into this fandom that most of the players were rich, entitled white jocks, and everything that comes with that.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
Nah. Kane/Toews/the BlackHawks aren't a part of either of my fannish experiences (fandom/mainstream sports fandom), so I'm sticking around. I do find that I've gravitated more toward women's hockey lately though (trying to decide on an NWHL team to follow, considering buying some gear, plotting out fic, etc).

(I wasn't surprised in the slightest by Toews' comments. I was pretty disappointed by them / in him, but I think, more than anything, I was disappointed that he lived down to my low, low expectations.)

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
I wasn't a K/T fan or a Hawks fan to begin with, so no.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
This is at least the fifth time since I've become a hockey fan that something terrible like this has come to light/happened, so no. And it's only been three years.

This is at least the fifth time since I've become a hockey fan that something like this has come to light, so yeah. Straw, meet camel.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
Although I understand the urge, I hope people who are leaving will reconsider, maybe after taking a little health break. Of course, it's easy for me to say that because I never liked the team or any of the individuals involved. If my favorite players did or said these things, I'd be devastated and would probably have a hard time dealing with fandom.

Re: Patrick Kane

From: (Anonymous)
I have to say, as someone whose favorite team was the Blackhawks, that it matters much more when it's your faves. Irrational but true.

Re: Patrick Kane

DA

Exactly. And since I was a fan of the Blackhawks and wrote only K/T, switching to another team is basically the same thing as starting a new fandom. Given how grossed out I am by my former BSOs, watching hockey -- any hockey -- is going to be painful this fall.

I'm looking for a new fandom.
