Re: Fic Discussion - time and time again by cornfields

"I can't believe you erased me. You threw me out and then you erased me," says a voice that almost reminds Mike of someone, almost.

"Who is this?" Mike asks, hunched over the steering wheel a little. He can kind of guess-- this must be the guy Joel had told him about.

The guy laughs, but not like anything is funny. "It's Tom, Mike. Go to hell," the guy says before disconnecting.

I liked it but I really needed an explanation for the cheating.

I straight up liked it.

It was well written, a lot of the memories as they were described were poignant.

It does seem to have been a very extreme reaction though, to decided to erase someone. I guess it's tricky, because obviously you need enough of a catalyst to justify erasing someone, but nothing so terrible that it made the ending unpleasant.

I liked this, but I wish there had been more build up once they meet again, rather then OH HEY HOT GUY TIME TO DATE. I would have liked more getting to know each other all over again+ oops i'm attracted to+ and we really shouldn't date because it ended so badly that I erased you. The memory erasure parts were really good and really sad, though.

Yes, it did seem very abrupt, and it was surprising that their friends seemed to be encouraging them to give it another shot.

Yeah, it seems bizarre for a friend in that scenario to just approve of them going at it again, even if they were mad at them for erasing the memories in the first place like Nicky was. It would have been more believable for me if it was just a little less abrupt!

Ayrt - Yeah, it was Nicky that confused me, because he was so pissed off. And when Ovi first spotted them talking in the kitchen he was concerned about Nicky's reaction, but Nicky was fine with it.

It did seem a bit abrupt, but I also got the sense that Nicky and Ovi were way more disturbed about the erasure than anything that had actually gone down between Mike and Tom before they decided to erase one another from memory. So, on that level, I could see them wanting them back together, or at least not objecting, because the traumatic part for them was the idea that someone could erase everything they'd been to each other. And Tom and Mike getting back together proves that not everything can be erased after all.

I could 100% buy this interpretation, but then Nicky and Ovi aren't looking out for their friends, but instead are safeguarding their own perceptions of the permanency of love. Which is kind of :/ to me.

Well, I don't think that Nicky and Ovi didn't care about Mike and Tom, but I think their reaction to the erasure was not 100% rooted in that caring. Ovi was explicitly disturbed by the idea that Nicky could erase their eight-year relationship in 10 hours.

AYRT

Yeah, that part I was OK with. It was the idea that their reaction to Mike and Tom getting back together might not be rooted in their caring that bothered me, because it's the reading of the text that makes the most sense to me and it kind of says shitty things about Nicky and Ovi as friends.

I mean, it's not great, but how shitty they are as friends depends on how shitty Mike and Tom were to each other before they broke up. I don't get the impression that they were that bad, so Nicky and Ovi were disturbed by the erasure and thought that was the whole problem. I just don't think that was too separate from how disturbed they were by the idea of erasing other people in general, which clearly had a lot to do with how they felt about their own relationship.

Yeah I would be like no way. You are not doing this to each other/me again

AYRT ahh but wasn't Tom still staying with Nicky and Ovi?
I think now I understand, they just wanted him to move out again lol.

I laughed irl. I doubt that was cornfields' intention but the idea of Nicky and Ovi just wanting some alone time is weirdly perfect.

Ayrt - they took it in turns to sabotage the meal Tom was trying to cook so him and Mike had to go out.
And as soon as the door shut Nicky and Ovi were breaking out the Barry White and the whipped cream.

enh, this one didn't do it for me personally. Most of what I like about fanfiction is, well, basically feelings porn and communication, and this fic didn't give me any sense of resolution on the issues it brought up. It gave me all of the sad and nothing to fix or address the reasons for the sad, so the hopeful ending just felt hollow.
