Yeah, anyone who uses 'but Kobe was arrested!!' can immediately be countered with 'but Kobe is black tho'.

Black male celebrities doing shit things to women always face waaaaay more backlash than white male celebrities do. See: Chris Brown v. Sean Penn on smacking women around and a zillion other examples.

It's always kind of conflicting when I see famous black men get dragged over the coals for their actions the way famous white men never do. On the one hand, finally an appropriate degree of outrage towards violence and assault on women! On the other hand, degree only reaches appropriate level because of systemic racism! Intersectionality at its worst.

Yeppp. I mean, see also the looming shadow of OJ Simpson, probably the most famous "acquitted but definitely did it" case of the last 50 years. I agree with everyone that he definitely did it, but that we cite OJ and that so many people staunchly believe he did it (and deny that racism had a role in the case, because hi, a man can murder his wife and still be treated with racism) is really really really connected to the fact that he's black.

For sure. If OJ had been white and gotten away with it the same way, I wouldn't have been surprised if murdering his wife had been brushed under the rug by this point and he'd have been welcomed back into polite society. I mean jesus christ, look at how far people bend over backwards when it comes to pedophile scum like Roman Polanski and Woody Allen.

Yes! Not to mention Phil Spector. He's in prison now, but 1) people used to defend him to my face, when the violence stuff was "rumors" and not an actual criminal investigation, 2) people still defend his previous work and call him a genius. Still! Our perception of guilt and of...let's call it moral culpability, absolutely bends based on race. See also Madelyn saying maybe Kane didn't realize the woman "wasn't appreciating proceedings" or whatever it was she said. If, say, Evander Kane were facing the same accusations, I kind of doubt people would be working to come up with accidental rape scenarios.

lol if it had been the better Kane in the same situation he'd be serving 2-5 by now.

I say lol to mask the crippling gloominess that just followed that thought process. I want more accountability for men's crimes against women, sure. But I sure as hell don't want it like that.
