Authors on the meme, do you feel encouraged to write more based on the kudos you receive?

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Not encouraged to write more, per se, but I take them as an "I liked this." It's not like AO3 offers "I read this, I guess" vs. "THIS WAS AWESOME BUT I AM SHY!!!" kudos options. They're all the same, and so I choose to believe they're just another kind of "like" button. Which is also how I use it on other people's stories.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
I would write regardless, because I have a drive to write. I have some fics that have over 100 kudos and some that have none. By the time I'm done with a fic, I hate it so much and feel like such a crappy writer that usually kudos just helps me feel less crappy and that maybe my story was useful to another person in some way.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, they are definitely encouraging.

I have the same small number of people that I don't think I've ever talked to but that seem to kudos almost everything I write. When I get a kudos outside of that group, especially when it's from an author I like/admire, that makes me happy. Comments are even better but I don't get very many.

Yes. And I've been around since well before the AO3.

Yes, they are definitely encouraging.

Obviously? I mean, even if I'm writing something that is mostly self-motivated and I wouldn't care if people didn't kudos, kudos are never discouraging for writing more. The only effect they have is in the "write more" direction.

I agree with the nonny above, this is the weirdest kudos wank ever.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Very honestly, I haven't written anything in over a year, and when I get kudos on old stuff, my first reaction tends to be "you actually liked that piece of shit? Why?". However, my reaction is definitely atypical.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Not directed specifically at you, more as a general response to this entire author discussion, but wow, this is making me scared to leave kudos or comments on fic anymore! Even beyond the fact that they're now being used to compile a hate list, they make the author cringe and wonder why I liked "this piece of shit," make them anxious, make them wonder why I'm reading an old fic….

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
One nonnie does not a trend make. Most of us authors are delighted to get comments on old stuff!

Rareteam author here, and I notice that every now and then I get kudos on a bunch of my old stuff after either I post something new or someone else posts something new about one of the guys I write.

It's always welcome in any case, as far as I'm concerned. <3

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Another rareteam author seconding this. I welcome all kudos and comments with open arms. <3

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
As another rareteam author, I also see and notice this, and I appreciate it! And then I hope this person leaving kudos on all my fic with x player is now in love with the team/pairing and will suffer like I suffer, muhahahaha. Erm, I mean, yay kudos?

(In all seriousness, yay kudos.)

Anon, believe me, with me it's just that I have some mental issues that I can't afford to get treatment for and think that absolutely everything I write is terrible. And instead of kudos changing my mind, they just make me assume the person has bad taste. Because they must, if they liked something I wrote, as everything I write is terrible. It's my own personal circular reasoning used to justify my own self-hatred. Don't assume most people are like me.

:(

I used to be generous with kudos, but I've become more hesitant with kudosing older works or works with many kudos, because too many authors have said they find it weird, tiring or feel a little disappointed every time someone shows them they "can't be bothered to comment".

Personally I love the idea of kudos, because most of the time I have nothing to say beyond "I liked this fic". Too much comment wank has made me stop telling authors why I like their fic, because what if they get mad that I like it for the wrong reasons, but it's less attractive giving kudos now knowing that they may not be welcome either.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Noooo nonny. I love getting kudos on old works! The only thing I don't like on old works is nitpicky comments about things I got wrong or ways I could improve my writing. Got one recently on somehting written over five years ago and I was like I've fixed all that by now...

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
When I'm reading, kudos is generally what I leave if I liked the fic but either didn't have much else to say or another commenter picked up on whatever I specifically liked already. I mostly only leave comments if I have more to say than "this was really cute/sweet/hot/whatever" (and *especially* if I have questions related to the fic), and there are a few authors I usually don't comment on because they either a) generally don't answer comments or b) pretty much just give everybody "thank you!" type comments.

(Both of which are legit ways to do fandom, *I* just am generally not going to take the time and effort to make a namespace comment if I'm unlikely to get a response.)

When I'm the one writing--kudos are cool, but comments are *awesome*. I like getting a chance to engage with my readers, because I almost always know more about the fic/characters than actually makes it into the final product and it's fun getting to babble a little about the story behind the story. (I may have this perspective because I'm a NNF writing rarepairs who started posting fic well before ao3 opened up, though.)

There are times I wish there was a way to kudos/like fills on the kinkmeme as opposed to having to actually have to write something.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
I prefer kudos to comments, so yes. Comments make me anxious and if I could turn them off I probably would.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
i'd write anyway, but it's a good method of positive reinforcement for me to keep posting things. i do assume that people who kudos like the fic, and so it's gratifying if a fic gets 10% or more kudos to hits.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
It can make me feel encouraged or it can do the opposite. There have been times when I've worked really, really hard on a fic and it only gets a handful of kudos, and that makes me question whether all the work was worth it. But usually that doesn't happen, and kudos serve as a confidence booster.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Aw, you shouldn't let it get to you, nonnie. I find my kudos count is much higher for extra fluffy fics and for the most popular of the pairings I write. I don't think I'm a markedly worse writer when I'm writing different types of stories or less popular pairings. They just have less of an audience. :)

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
i will say this is why i instinctively pay more attention to kudos-to-hits percentage rather than actual number of kudos. i always get fewer kudos on rare pairing and teams, but if the proportion is approximately the same than it doesn't feel any different to me.

Honestly, I don't think that works for certain topics in this fandom. It's possible I'm writing my best when I'm writing fluff, but I don't think that's the case.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

DA agreeing.

The most-kudosed fic I have is a tiny fluffy AU featuring the largest pairing that I write. The next most-kudosed was from a fic exchange and another pairing that I don't normally write, and got more than usual because I didn't leave it locked like I usually do.

The third-most is the one that I actually think is my best work, and features my seldom-written favorite team. And I've noticed that while it might not get a LOT of feedback, the people who liked it absolutely loved it, and that was so very encouraging.

One or two enthusiastic commenters when I'm working my way through a sin bin fill are better than big piles of kudos, not that big piles of kudos wouldn't be nice...
