From: (Anonymous)I understand why Vinny is keeping quiet on his end (trying really hard not to be the clingy friend, I sympathize), but he probably should have fessed up about his feelings for Anton a while ago. He's been in holding position for so long that it's annoying. Just say something and you'll either get the guy or get over it!
I hate fics when I end up saying "just talk to each other!!" out loud to my monitor, but this is heading in that direction.

From: (Anonymous)This annoys me less than normal "just talk to each other" scenarios, because Vinny's got all these additional concerns about being ace and being convinced that he therefore isn't fit to date anyone. Actually, that's one of the reasons it's working for me so well.

From: (Anonymous)That's why I've held on this long, actually - if it were part 18 in a fic without those extra concerns and with no talking, I would've given up a long time ago. But still, Vinny was clearly stuck in a holding pattern that was going to collapse one way or another. In a way I'm glad something changed, even if it is because Anton is also incapable of talking about his feelings. Maybe eventually they'll snap and actually talk to each other.
What I'm worried about is this series having an unhappy ending. Of all the fics the author writes, this is the one that I'm most invested in and think could actually work out. If it just falls apart because of bad communication...I guess that would be a realistic outcome, but it's really not the one I want.

From: (Anonymous)Yeah as someone who has a love for mutual pining as a trope it is so hard to pull off without the annoying "just talk to each other" element, but I think Vinny's worries about how Anton or anyone really would deal with him being ace seems realistic.

From: (Anonymous)It makes sense to me that Anton hasn't make a move because Vinny explicitly told him he wasn't gay, but he keeps acting like such a jerk and Vinny is so unwilling to call him out on it that it's starting to put me off shipping them. He should just go platonically cuddle that cool goalie girl.

From: (Anonymous)Yeah, I understand that part of the problem is that Anton is asking the wrong questions/doesn't know that there's an option here for them to be together other than gay, but it's still so frustrating that his solution is to date someone else and monitor Vinny for signs of jealousy. That is not healthy for anyone.
I am 100% on the "go platonically cuddle that cool goalie girl" train. Vinny already doesn't seem to have a problem with his love interests hooking up with other people and the two goalies are already way better at communicating than Vinny and Anton, so it could work out perfectly! They could run a summer camp for bby goalies together.

From: (Anonymous)From the way the author talked about it on tumblr I thought the conflict was going to be how they'd make a romantic but not sexual relationship work, but surly/saintly pairings and endless pining are kind of her Thing so I'm not surprised it's gone this way. Hopefully it will get more emotionally healthy eventually and if not I'm willing to co-write goalie cuddle fix-it fic.

From: (Anonymous)I read the whole thing differently, actually. My impression was Anton's finally gotten the idea Vinny's asexual in the last few fics but has mistakenly assumed it's whole package, not asexual+homoromantic, attempted to accept that and is trying his damndest to get over Vinny at this point but is just... not being very good at figuring out how to do it. Maybe I'm giving him too much credit, idk. The way the whole Vinny series is written is pretty much a case study in things unsaid, both between the characters and in how the reader's supposed to pick up the larger context from Vinny's somewhat spacey perspective.

From: (Anonymous)I kind of read it similarly, that Anton was trying to create some space between him and Vinny, but he's just really bad about doing it, going totally overboard and getting jealous when he thinks Vinny is trying to replace him.

From: (Anonymous)I wouldn't say Anton's probably thought it through enough to be like 'yes hmmm this must be one of those asexuals i have read about in this sociology textbook' but I do think he's got a firm idea by now, both through some vague affirmations from Vinny himself throughout the more recent fics and through the fact that he lives and regularly hangs out with the dude, that Vinny doesn't want to do the sex things and probably isn't going to suddenly start doing them any time soon.
Which, because they're both on this road without a map here, he's extended to "Vinny will never want to do the sex things with me and by extension this means he will never want to be my boyfriend" which is a fairly reasonable conclusion to draw, considering.
So yeah, I saw it as Anton trying to find something to fill the Vinny-shaped hole in his heart because he thinks he's figured out that the no-sex thing means Vinny won't ever want to get in there. Meanwhile Vinny's in the corner thinking he's figured out that the no-sex thing means Anton won't ever want Vinny to get in there. What a mess.

On the other hand, idgaf that it doesn't sound like David and Jake get a romantic HEA. Basically my David OTP is David/Therapy although I'd be all over D/s verse Kurzamov/David, so if David ends up single but closer to being a Real Boy I'm cool with that.

From: (Anonymous)plus iirc he outed david to some of his buddies without even *talking* to david about it much less getting david's approval, which is NOT FUCKING COOL. and if i remember correctly, benson's one of those guys and uses that knowledge to bully david. i refuse to reread enough to make sure i'm remembering properly, though.
(i also kind of want david/rousseau, although their collective "don't want to talk" thing would probably doom it from the start.)

From: (Anonymous)I don't remember Jake outing him to Benson, but yeah, he totally outed David to some members of his (Jake's) team despite the fact that David was pretty explicit about wanting to stay in the closet.
I like where this series ended the first time, with them getting ready for their first real date. The part of me that loves that ending holds out some hope that they can get their relationship back to a healthier place, though I don't know at this point if that's even possible. So basically in my mind it ends at that first date.
