Re: general RPF fandom discussion

Not a K/T fan but I was introduced to fandom through S/G fic with no prior knowledge of hockey so I can see how someone could stumble across K/T fic and only realise what Patrick Kane has done until after they involve themselves in fandom.

AYRT- I can't see anyone doing even basic research prior to writing something and not finding out, before writing.
And it's going to be the first thing you find out when you try to involve yourself in fandom.

It will be the first thing you find out now. At the end of the season? Next year? That's really going to depend on how all of this plays out legally.

For comparison

Right there in his wkipedia.
The articles show up on the second page of google results.
There is already something on Kane's wikipedia, and I think more coverage.

Sure, right now. But assuming this case goes like other rape cases involving famous, high-profile athletes, what are the chances a casual researcher will even hear about this?

(Obviously there's likely to be a line in his wiki article if this manages to go to trial, but otherwise...)

Kobe Bryant's wiki mentions the allegations against him even though that case never went to criminal trial.

Yes, but to be blunt, Kobe's Black. Black famous people who do terrible things aren't treated like white famous people who do terrible things.

I agree, but I also think this has received enough coverage/attention that there will be some mention on Wikipedia even if just to say the charges were dropped.

I have definitely jumped into fandoms and just started reading fic without doing any research about the canon, especially if it's something fairly self-explanatory like hockey that I already have some background osmosis knowledge about. So I wouldn't write anything without research, but I can see myself reading a couple fics and gettng invested in the characters, and then googling and being horrified in retrospect (which is actually what happened to me with Kane fic when I first got into the fandom-- someone mentioned something shitty he did and it prompted me to Google further and be skeeved out).
