Every so often I can tell when a friend left a comment, either by content/style or because they say the same thing in the same way elsewhere. People who ID themselves a lot ("Isles nonny"), yes, both otherwise I can't recognize anybody.

Otoh, I live in constant paranoia of outing myself because of my particular combo of favorite teams and players, and I frequently delete half-written comments that make my stories or in progress fics too identifiable, or repeat stuff I've said somewhere else recently. I worry about that a lot more than picking out other people (which makes me wonder if everyone is that way, so paradoxically I should worry less?)

I'm also really paranoid and don't share as much about the things I like as I have before on anon memes (where I was super recognizable but didn't mind because at worst someone would say "hi" in namespace).

Honestly anon memes are a bit of an odd fit for me, and I wish deeply there was still a big hockey RPF presence on DW (not that I really use it other than a weekly reading list skim these days). I'm intermittently pretty active here and it's weird to not actually build up any capital or real social connections; every interaction is basically starting from scratch. I know that's the appeal for most people, but it's definitely a change for me.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

It's weird for me, too, because in the past I have made friends on anon memes. But I think we're all pretty wary about being ID'd here, in a way that I, at least, didn't have to worry about before. My likes are very distinctive, but that just meant people who liked those same things would say hi to me. And then you'd start recognizing someone and want to find out who they were so you could become friends, and then you did and would and it was awesome. Like I said, worse case scenario, someone said 'hi' to me off-meme. I miss some of that, honestly.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, honestly I'd love to do a meetup for this meme but there is stronger culture of privacy here than on other anonmemes.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
I've enjoyed myself immensely here and I would like to meet people?

But not in this fucking fandom. In this fandom, I have no presence other than fic and a tightly locked twitter, because it's full of crazies.

My last anon meme would do friending memes. At least, it did once. It was so much less careful. I think the culture of this fandom is pretty understandable, even though I think it might be more fun otherwise.

It's funny because I've never expressed an opinion here I wouldn't in namespace, just maybe a little less diplomatically, but I can tell deanoning is pretty discouraged. It's actually fascinating to have all these contextless interactions, but sometimes I want to be like "I was the nonny who said __ earlier!" even if it's not directly relevant, because it orients me in the sprawl.

Yeah, that's pretty much exactly how I feel. From what I can recall, I cant think of anything I wouldn't put my name too. Hell, I'm so boring I can say the same for my few kinkmeme prompts.

You could totally do that if you wanted. It's all a matter what you're comfortable with. People even more or less out themselves directly when talking about kinkmeme fills and so on, and no one minds.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)

I'm not censoring my opinions or anything. Sometimes I might get a little snarky, but I'm not a different person or anything. There are just some fic things I'd love to talk about, and I ... don't. Which is a little sad for me, honestly.

Yeah, on past anon memes, there were "x area of expertise nonnies" and the like, and I enjoyed that. Even though it was all anon it felt like more of a community that way.

I don't really have a namespace presence, I was out of fandom for a long time.
I am probably more open about liking dark things or talking about kinks I like here than I would be in namespace.

I think it's the give a man a mask and he'll tell you the truth thing more than it being a Hockey RPF thing.

But, I'm never going to be a person who links fandom stuff with rl identity stuff much.

I wish there was something like this in namespace. I want to talk hockey with fellow fangirls without being anon!

Well, that was supposed to be stickhandled. Try Twitter? Fairly straightfoward to jump into circles of conversation there.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Given everything with this fandom, I can't imagine being comfortable in namespace to discuss half the shit we talk about here, and no one would gaf if they knew I was here. And I know we have at least a handful of anons whose presence if it were widely known would cause a stir.

I share this feeling, and wish there was someway to actually get to know some of the nonnies I've interacted with here in namespace/IRL.

I'm still on DW, and I still post hockey stuff occasionally - I hosted a bunch about the Kessel trade, for example. There's a handful of us who are fairly active still, and I don't think we're hard to find. So I know it's not the same, but I always welcome more hockey talk over there!

Maybe someone should link a friending meme over on ffa, because I have no idea how I'd find it besides.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

I no longer really have a namespace presence in fandom, so for me it's different. Maybe I'd feel differently if hockey RPF fandom was less hostile, but as is I'm glad to only interact with it anonymously.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, same here. I was never a BNF, but I reached somewhat known in a few fandoms on LJ. But since the move to tumblr my namespace presence has shrunk down and down and down, and now I don't have any at all beyond leaving kudos and the very rare comment. I mean, to the point that I abandoned my old AO3 that has the same name as my LJ/DW and has all my fic on it, and now I use a new, empty AO3 account. And if I ever start writing again, I'll use the new account.

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

I worry sometimes about getting recognized (rarepair fan/author), and then sometimes I'm all "yeah, I said this in namespace, whatever". It depends a *lot* on the wank and/or embarrassment potential of the thread.

(I find myself doing research a *lot* when I'm writing comments with any actual hockey/personal but easily googleable facts I don't know off the top, because I have seen and participated in way too many meme wanks about people not doing at least minimal research and I never want to be 'that person').

Re: general RPF fandom discussion

From: (Anonymous)
LOL are you me? I mean, I know you're not, but I could totally have written this exact thing.

Rarepair + excessive research solidarity forever!

(I'm the one that's talked a few times about going through an endless pile of OHL boxscores for fic research purposes.)

Was one of those times in response to me talking about wanting non-dynamic Shea Weber and having to keep checking his wiki page for dates and such?

I don't remember that specifically but it's entirely possible.
