this is less a vent and more of a genuine question, but I'm wondering what people mean when they tag their fic as freeform??? or like Freeform-Fandom Name? For me it's pretty much a sign that I don't want to read that fic, (because it seems to be pointing towards some sort of unstructured...thing) but I can't imagine the author has that intention when they tag it???

Isn't a freeform tag a specific kind of tag that isn't properly associated with anything on the AO3 yet?

That's an AO3 tagging thing, not something that they're using to describe their fic.

But don't they put it there themselves? I didn't think AO3 just automatically assigned things tags like that

"Freeform" is one thing AO3 does automatically assign. It usually means they put a tag in the wrong field.

ah, gotcha. I will try to be less judgmental in the future with that in mind, lol.

It's a tag that doesn't have enough uses yet that it's an "official" searchable Ao3 tag.

No, those don't get freeform tags. Tags get "freeform" after them if they're a canonical tag in a different field than the one you used it in. Like, if you put "Sidney Crosby" into additional tags instead of character tags, it would default to "Sidney Crosby - freeform" so that it doesn't connect to the official character tag. But if you make a brand new tag that no one else has used before or doesn't have enough to get a canonical tag, that will not be marked freeform.

ayrt

I figured. ;) I've been responsible for at least a couple lately.

Yeah, AO3 attaches that suffixes to tags sometimes. Although I'm not sure on what basis, since I've seen plenty of long rambly Tumblr-type tags on AO3 that aren't marked as "freeform."

If they're not synned (marked as a synonym) of a canonical tag or a canonical tag, it shows up. If you don't select the ao3 tag it suggests, it will also sometimes show up

"Freeform" comes from putting things like a fandom name in the additional tags field. The archive does it so that it's not connected to the official tag.

I've done it on purpose before when I've written fusions. I know how much it annoys me when a there's a new fic in one of my fandoms that's actually a fic for a different fandom using mine as set dressing, so if I'm writing a fusion, I put the other fandom name into the additional tags field and get a "freeform" on it.

that is what Alternate Universe - Fandom Name is for.
