For me as a writer, it's just because I could see the strings. "What could Jack do that would be awkward? Oh, I know, Canadians take off their shoes and Americans don't." FTR I also thought Connor getting so anxious about it was silly, especially for a teenage boy. It felt like a stereotype to me.

I'm also the person who complained about them bitching about the weather in their cities in every fic, because it feels like mindless space-filler. (I'd also think young hockey players would be trying to out-tough each other, not whine that they're cold.)

Surely whining vs out-toughing would depend on the hockey player.

ok as a Canadian who has lived in parts of Canada that are genuinely cold, deserving of complaining (Edmonton) and parts of Canada that really aren't that cold comparitively but we complain anyway (Toronto area) Canadians literally never ever stop complaining about the weather. You only stop complaining about how cold it is to reminisce about how much colder it was that one time or how bad last years blizzard was (it was baaad I had no power at my house for a week). I think its very easy to both complain about how cold it is and brag about how hardy and tough you are and I have yet to read a fic McEichel or otherwise that I felt overemphasized how goddamn much Canadian teenagers like to talk about the weather. We genuinely do.
