#16 – Luck Be a Ladd-y Tonight

This is the sixteenth post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

THE RULES

And the reason is because they (and readers) care about the canon. I read hockey for the hockey and the hockey players. Not for character X you made up in your head.

I also read hockey for the hockey and the hockey players, which is why I'd much rather read a character study of one dude who's still playing hockey and in the hockey world and the guy he hooks up with than fic about said guy and an AU version of another player who is related to said other player in name only (and is going to be just as made up in the writer's head as an OC at that point ANYWAY).

Well if they're just as made up, there's no problem is there? Do a name replace just for you and we can all be happy.

Obviously it's not "just for me" if the subthread OP posted this desire in the "fics you want" thread.

I could just as easily say that people who hate OCs can just name replace with their fandom fave and pretend it's an AU and we can all be happy.

But no, obviously those 330 people who've kudosed ionthesparrow's Jeff Carter/OMC fics are figments of my imagination.

That's because it's ionthesparrow who is the best Kings writer out there. It's not FOR the OMC.

Right, it's FOR the Jeff character study and the description of his friendship with Mike, exactly the kinds of things OMCs enable. My point is that it didn't stop the fic from being good. Of course OMC fic from bad writers is going to be bad.

That is the nature of an anon meme. Tomorrow, someone will probably get weirdly aggressive about goalie pads, flooring materials, or Crosby/Trees.

Someday that OP will come back and tell us what they really meant - Crosby/Toews, I'm guessing - but in the meantime I am greatly enjoying that thread.

I don't know why people always act surprised about people being argumentative about fandom things. Rice cookers? Fine, weird argument. People fundamentally not liking OMCs? Pretty common.
