WJC reminded me that Martin Reway exists. While it's a goddamn travesty that he's apparently wiped his instagram, his second most recent tweet is about Austin Matthews and I... ship it?

Re: Fandom Goggles

Kinda ot, but I can't seem to get a grasp of Matthews personality. He seems kind of boring, like McDavid, but in a less "good Canadian kid"-way lol.

Re: Fandom Goggles

Isn't he from Phoenix? He is automatically denied "good Canadian boy" status. The best he can be is a "brash but talented American". GCB is a very exclusive club.

A bit of a tangent, but I'm kind of excited to see if we end up with a draft where none of the top 5 picks are Canadian. The most recent projection that I saw had 3 Americans and 2 Finns.

No Chychrun or were they counting him as American? It could be cool though.

da

Depends on if you're counting who he plays for internationally or birthplace. It's usually birthplace but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ we'll see how they spin it.

You know, I was wondering what gave with this sudden burst of hockey players from Boca Raton, of all places, but then I remembered... Panthers.

Re: Fandom Goggles

I have no idea what the eligibility rules for that tournament were, but the fact that he ended up playing for Team Ontario seems weird to me. I guess he counted because his dad grew up there, even if neither was born there? Still, kind of strange.

Re: Fandom Goggles

From: (Anonymous)
I was counting him as American, since he started playing in Florida and didn't move to Canada until he was 15. Unless I got my facts mixed up, but I was pretty sure he moved to play in the OHL because they wouldn't let him start early in the USHL.

Re: Fandom Goggles

From: (Anonymous)
He's a dual who moved to Canada and plays for Canada because the usnt/dp wouldn't take him at 15 (or something). He's not the only one on either side, and people like to argue at length over which country they really belong to.

Re: Fandom Goggles

From: (Anonymous)
I actually didn't know he was dual, but that makes sense. Commence people arguing for the rest of his career over which country can claim him.

Re: Fandom Goggles

From: (Anonymous)
Hasn't he already played internationally for Canada? I'm not sure if the World U17 tournament counts, but if it does, he's already picked a side. No point arguing about it past that.

I've seen it said (meaning I haven't checked or anything) that since that isn't an official IIHF event he could still switch, but yeah I doubt he would.

Re: Fandom Goggles

From: (Anonymous)
I think that's fair if it's for the purpose of discussing the growth/spread of hockey. Just in other contexts it can be tricky (like people arguing what country he "should" play for or whatever).

Re: Fandom Goggles

This can't be true nonny! I haven't seen 1001 articles lamenting the downfall of Canadian hockey!

But that's good to hear. More and better hockey for everyone.

Re: Fandom Goggles

Even better, the three US players are from smaller/non-traditional markets (Scottsdale, AZ, St Louis, MO, and Boca Raton, FL). I kind of want the first round to be full of Americans, Europeans, and Canadian boys not from Ontario, just to see if Don Cherry's head would explode.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO

*Tears hair. Rends sackcloth. Liés down and cries about the state of our great and Noble sport and these upstarts weasling their way in*

Re: Fandom Goggles

The only Americans who sometimes count are the Minnesotans, and that's only because Minnesota and the entirety of Canada seem to have this weird mutual admiration society going on where they both claim that Minnesota is, like, Little Canada.
