Re: General Fandom Discussion

Anon from way, way above who though the people who hadn't seen Star Wars must have been infants (i.e. too young to have seen them when they were released, released, or when the prequels came out) -

I think the shock is because things like Star Wars and Harry Potter aren't specifically fandom experiences. Lucasfilms estimated that a billion people have seen Star Wars. That's a lot of people. The Harry Potter series are some of the most read books on the planet. They've sold 450 million copies, and are usually estimated just below religious books like the bible and Koran for most read books. So, these are pretty big things. There's a reason both of those franchises are worth billions.

Sure, they're not, but at the same time, ask any random person in fic fandom about football (either kind), which are also huge and worth billions, and odds are a huge chunk of fandom people couldn't name more than one or two players and possibly not even most of the teams.

We all grow up in our own bubbles, even when considering huge, multi-billion dollar pop culture properties, like Star Wars, Harry Potter, the Dallas Cowboys, or Manchester United.
