I mean, living with someone else's (non-infant) children for a year and change vs. being an actual full-time parent are two different things. I did the former plus a lot of caretaking (cooking, helping with homework, listening to all their weird elementary school drama, all the kinds of things you have to do for kids) and I knew before, during, and after that I had no intention of reproducing. There's a big difference in both attachment and responsibility there. Not to say it can't disagree with your characterization of him enough to be a dealbreaker, just that wanting to be a parent does not always logically follow from taking care of kids.

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, that's fair, but at the same time, it feels OOC to have the be a reason for a split with his gf to me. I also think writers should just go, whatever, it didn't work out with his gf, rather than trying to come up with a reason.

Re: Fic Discussion

I also felt like the author should have made up an OFC for the girlfriend if they were going this route, because using Ryanne in this context (even though she thankfully wasn't bashed) didn't really work for me. Like, the author admits they're not basing this on the actual facts of Claude's current relationship, and they're ignoring other IRL humans like Sid's gf, so I think an invented girlfriend would have worked better.

(I also see Claude as someone who would definitely want kids -- not just because of his relationship with Danny's kids, but with the way he treats his dogs as if they're children.)

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't he have a children's foundation, too? Or something?

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I gotta say, if that were the set up, then an OFC or a nameless girlfriend works a lot better than his IRL relationship, which has been going on since the last lockout, and one would imagine, discussed the possibility of kids by now. (I also gotta say that I could I guess buy the combo of birth control failure, opposition to abortion, and Claude not wanting to parent ... but he's a multimillionaire. They can opt out of a lot of parenting in terms of day-to-day caring for a kid.)

OFC is always preferable for sure and I didn't like the way they had him go about it either? Like he seemed so apathetic about the baby. Not even an 'I'm sorry I do not want/am not ready' he was just eh, a kid. Very off to me.

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
What do you expect? It's downjune. Of course the characterization is nothing at all like the players she's actually writing about.

You can tell it's her because she updated the posted on date twice to get her fic on the first page of the hockey tag. She's done it before. People who do it strike me as so desperate.

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Tons of people update the date on their fic so that it's on the hockey tag. Do you really think 80% of the fics in the collection were posted the day it opened?

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 02:49 am (UTC)(link)

Also AO3's dating system is fucked up. New stuff that gets posted ends up below stuff that was posted hours ago. (I sent them a bug report a while back and the response I got was basically "Yeah we know *shrug emoji*.") So maybe scale back on the "desperate."

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 02:52 am (UTC)(link)

Haven't posted enough on AO3 to confirm, but I think that happens because fic ends up in order of when the original document/draft is created, not when it's published.

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
NA yes, that's correct. For instance, if the draft was created at 8AM and you move the date up, everything posted after 8AM on that day is still going to show up after it, even if you published the draft at 9PM that evening.

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

I don't create drafts until I'm ready to post, and I still end up with fic down below other people's fic that was already in the tag.

The AO3 person said it was an indexing issue, I think.

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone updates the date on collection fics to the date it opens. That's fine and normal. Not everyone does it twice so they can get on the first page. That's unfair to every other author. And yes it smacks of hit count desperation.

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 03:05 am (UTC)(link)

I'll agree it's unfair to other authors if she really did update twice to get herself out of that huge list of anonymous fics that show up when collections go live. To me though, that seems less like desperation and more like ego. "I think my fic is better than these other fics" kind of deal.

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
This seems very grudge-holding.

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 02:51 am (UTC)(link)

Meme has long since griped not only about downjune's characterization faults, but her pacing issues and her Brandon Sutter obsession as well.

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that you bring all these topics up in a thread not about either pacing or Brand Sutter seems to support the grudge hypothesis.

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Can you read? I'm not the anon who said she changes her dates. I'm pointing these things out to show that meme has ragged on her before so it's not grudgey of one single person to continue to judge authors lots of people on meme have judged before.

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 03:05 am (UTC)(link)

Or for that matter bringing a criticism to a meme where people have been in agreement about the side eye worthiness of that particular author.

Re: Fic Discussion

Ok, so there's two of you who don't like her. But to imply that a large percentage of meme is in agreement with you is suspect, especially since the part about Brandon Sutter seems to be one anon's personal grudge. I've been in conversations about her work in the past and have expressed my enjoyment of it, and of her characterizations (because hell, we're all making this shit up anyway, and hers usually resonate with me pretty well). And reveals for this exchange haven't even happened yet, so to jump in to complain about a writer who you don't even know for sure is the writer of this fic seems super aggressive for no reason.

I'm the anon who had mixed feelings about this fic and didn't really like the use of Ryanne, but there were other things I did like about it and if it IS downjune, it won't be my favorite of her fics, but it's still light years better than half the fic on the hockey RPF tag on any given day.

Re: Fic Discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 04:05 am (UTC)(link)

+1 I don't appreciate being lumped in with "meme's" agreement of a topic, and while I don't like everyone downjune does (and I'm pretty sure this is her work), there's a lot of it I love, and her stuff is always a must-read however I end up feeling about it after I've read it.

I also really don't get the Brandon Sutter grudge. That does seem to read like one nonnie's hateboner. Meme as a whole is pretty damn chill about liking whatever random player you like.

Re: Fic Discussion

I don't really care about Brandon Sutter one way or the other, but I hate how this author latches on to players I like and gives them these really baffling/annoying characterizations. She leaves author's notes about how her characterizations are so unique and cool and she's having so much fun with them! And really she just makes them seem crazy and fucked up. That's her unique characterization for everyone.

She did it to Flower with her "hot mess" characterization. She did it to Sutter when she wanted to make him all damaged for Crosby to pamper. She's doing it to Letang now and writing him as an angry submissive mess that needs to be put down like a dog. It's getting progressively grosser and more ridiculous with each phase she goes through.

NA I've enjoyed a lot of downjune's stuff, too. I get why it's not to everyone's taste, but it's not really meme consensus that she's terrible. (Then again, I don't think there's much of a consensus on meme about anything.)

Re: Fic Discussion

but it's still light years better than half the fic on the hockey RPF tag on any given day.

lol I'm just going to assume you're friends with downjune or something.

FYI meme hating on Brandon Sutter (and hating on downjune's writing of Brandon Sutter as if he were a good player for us AS WELL AS her characterization of him and others) was not total, I will give you that. Because meme is never 100% in agreement on anything, duh.

But there was definitely way, way more than one of us. A large percentage of the people in those conversations actually. Just like there has been more than one of us complaining about her horrible Flower characterization, as the anon elsewhere mentioned.
