I really wish the NBCSN announcers would stop talking about fucking horses all the time.

Right, you didn't mean in that in the 'lock up your daughters and horses' way.

I realized that immediately as I hit "Post Comment" and chose just to leave it lol.

No, they just feel the need to inform everyone every few minutes that the Kentucky derby is happening soon or something. Idek.

Yeah, lol, I figured. I was half paying attention to commercials yesterday and I got confused when they started talking about horses.

I know it's probably the network telling them to talk about horses but seriously. They have a lot to say about whatever horse event is happening.

I just really wonder how many people actually care about the Kentucky Derby. Seriously. Before I got commercials all through hockey playoffs last year, I'd heard of the Kentucky Derby, but I didn't even know the Triple Crown existed.

A heck of a lot of people care about the Kentucky Derby, way more than care about the Stanley Cup in the US.

I have friends who went to Belmont last year to watch whatever that horse was win the Triple Crown but they mostly seemed into it for the drinking in fancy hats aspect, tbh. I just can't get excited about the athletic accomplishments of a horse. They hardly ever talk about the jockeys and the race is hyped up for 2+ hours beforehand and then over in like a minute.

I think it's mostly a betting thing

That makes a lot more sense to me than people actually giving a shit about athletic horses.

It probably helps that it's not much of a time commitment. It's like watching the ball drop on New Year's - doesn't take long, and then you can say you did it.

More than care about hockey, in the US anyway.

I'm so sheltered and oblivious, aren't I cute and special!

Decent attempt at starting wank, if a bit transparent.

Given that horse racing is even more of a rich white people thing than ice hockey is....

Everyday horse racing, sure. But the possibility of a Triple Crown winner is usually front page news unlike the Stanley Cup every year.

And the attitude of "well I've never heard of this thing, so no one must actually care about it" is silly, especially from a hockey fan. (I mean, before I started watching hockey, the only player besides Gretzsky I could name was Ovechkin -- only because he was engaged to Maria Kirilenko. I equally didn't care about horse racing, but I feel like I was hearing about the Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown almost every year.)

sa

And I still can't spell Gretzky's name right. Doh.

Eh, I definitely grew up hearing about the Kentucky Derby, but I honestly don't care about hearing about it constantly while I'm watching a hockey game. I get why NBC does it for advertising purposes, but I still find it annoying. It would be equally annoying if I were trying to watch a basketball game and they felt the need to constantly bring up the US Open.

ayrt

No, I totally get being annoyed by it. When I'm watching my niche sports I don't want to hear about American football, for example. It's specifically the assumption that just because you don't know about something, that means no one cares about it that I find silly.

That sort of discussion would certainly liven up the evening. Color commentary in the truest sense of the phrase.

One of the horses running in the derby this weekend is named Trojan Nation, if I remember the graphic correctly.

If we have to listen to all this horse talk, the least they could do is flash pictures of various players riding horses while wearing nothing but chaps and a cowboy hat.

The favorite to win is named after Gustav Nyquist! Apparently the owner is a big Red Wings fan.
