Given that horse racing is even more of a rich white people thing than ice hockey is....

Everyday horse racing, sure. But the possibility of a Triple Crown winner is usually front page news unlike the Stanley Cup every year.

And the attitude of "well I've never heard of this thing, so no one must actually care about it" is silly, especially from a hockey fan. (I mean, before I started watching hockey, the only player besides Gretzsky I could name was Ovechkin -- only because he was engaged to Maria Kirilenko. I equally didn't care about horse racing, but I feel like I was hearing about the Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown almost every year.)

And I still can't spell Gretzky's name right. Doh.

Eh, I definitely grew up hearing about the Kentucky Derby, but I honestly don't care about hearing about it constantly while I'm watching a hockey game. I get why NBC does it for advertising purposes, but I still find it annoying. It would be equally annoying if I were trying to watch a basketball game and they felt the need to constantly bring up the US Open.

No, I totally get being annoyed by it. When I'm watching my niche sports I don't want to hear about American football, for example. It's specifically the assumption that just because you don't know about something, that means no one cares about it that I find silly.
