#23 — Brown Goes Down

This is the twenty-third post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

I generally like her writing, but yeah, that was really frustrating to me. I don't know what the solution is for someone who really wants kids and someone who doesn't, but treating the pre-existing child like she doesn't (won't) matter as much as the one with Claude's True Love really doesn't work for me. Maaaaybe if Sid was pretty much just expecting to raise his kid alone and paralleled Ryanne a lot more, but that's not where this seemed to end up. The place where I'd quibble with you a little is your comment about Sid and Juniors - I don't know that he'd frame things that way, but he did canonically have a pretty horrible time in youth hockey and possibly Juniors - from his teammates and competitors alike, not to mention parents. I can see a person who really wanted to be a parent wanting to protect his child from the kind of bullying he experienced.

I don't think she's talking about bullies in Juniors though. I think she's talking about the stories of Juniors teams treating women like shit a la the rumors about Taylor Hall and Zack Kassian.

For the love of god. Junior. It's Junior. Juniors is where you buy cheesecake.

If it's men's hockey and women's hockey, it can damn well be juniors. Jeff Marek is not the boss of me. Thank goodness, because he's kind of an ass.

And why wouldn't it be juniors anyway? You're talking about at least three different leagues, if not more.

Because it's the Major Junior hockey league. Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, right? Sid wasn't in all three different leagues; no one is.

It's also meant to differentiate between Major Junior and World Juniors, which is a different thing.

Think of how weird this sounds: "When I was in Nationals Hockey League...I had this teammate back in Nationals..." It's just wrong.

While grammatical arguments are often useful for actually figuring out the common phrase, I'm most interested in what is colloquially used, not what would be "correct". I certainly don't know, all my usage is picked up from fic. Does anyone know what actual hockey players who came up through one of the Canadian junior leagues call it?

They mostly seem to refer specifically to "the Q" and "the O", instead. I don't remember what they call the third one.

I did a search and came to the conclusion that NHL.com tends to use juniors more than junior. Junior is usually used as an adjective, eg junior team, whereas juniors stands alone. See this article for examples of both: https://www.nhl.com/news/clock-ticks-for-junior-aged-prospects-on-nhl-rosters/c-736544 At one point junior is used as a standalone, but it's usually juniors.

A broader search showed that media sources also tend to use juniors over junior.

I'm not saying you're wrong necessarily about how it should be, just that common usage is a thing, and it seems to be a thing pointing towards juniors.

So, your objection is only to when the Q is spoken about? When people are talking about the leagues as a group or the Dub or the O (neither of which have major junior in their name), you don't care if they use juniors? That seems a very narrow rule.

It sounds wrong, because that's not the equivalent. It's the equivalent of "pros" or "minors." When I was in the pros. You wouldn't say "when I was in the pro" or "when I was in the minor." That's just wrong.

Also Stanley Cup playoffs vs Stanley Cup Final. There are many playoffs but only one Final.

Looking at it again, you might be right - I can't tell from context exactly in what way junior hockey boys are meant to be horrible. My mind went to the bullying because that seemed more likely to fit coming from Sid's perspective, I think.

See, there's where it felt like it was going to me. The difference is that Claude is going to be adjacent to the kid of someone he's in love with, as opposed to being adjacent to the kid of someone he's not in love with.

Riiight. Because when you marry someone, you're going to be adjacent to their kid. Not involved in their daily life or anything.

Oh MAN. You actually just made me think of something else that should have pinged when I read the first fic but didn't. I was so caught up in hating how horrible she made Claude that I didn't even think about how much it does not jibe with his entire interaction with the Briere family. It's not fanon to say that Claude loves the Briere irl and irl he probably wasn't in love with Danny. So we have a person with the capacity to love his friend's kids like family and she's written him as actively being gross and neglectful towards his own kid because he's in love with Sid. But he really wants to raise Sid's adoptive kid because they're together? I get more angry at downjune the more I think about how badly she's dealt with Claude.

He's marrying Sid, and presumably they will share a house, but Claude will remain so very adjacent to Sidney Crosby's Enlightened adoptive son.

Ah yes. I can just imagine it.

Kid: So Claude. Let's discuss the grossness of the incident where you laid hands on another person without their permission.

Claude: Be quiet. Can't you see I'm adjacent to you?

Kid: Okay. *turns to Sid* Dad, why have you never spoken out against the homophobia, sexism and racism in the NHL despite being apparently Determined to teach me to stand against these things that are so endemic in Junior?

Sid: new phone, who dis?

Claude: *is adjacent*

We mentioned the stupidity of the idea that Sidney Crosby is somehow better than his fellow jocks on Issues when he has never been so in reality, but no one has mentioned downjune having him say that he wants adoptive kids because any biological kids will....what, exactly? Get more attention for having his DNA?

It seems like that's what downjune is saying, considering that Sid proceeds as if the adoptive kid will definitely play hockey. Which was followed by my personal favorite line - Sid would be happy to have a female child since there's now a paying women's league. A women's league where salaries are a pittance and many players can't live off them. Awesome.

Yeah, I was seriously side-eyeing that. It all just seems so utterly dismissive of Claude's existing kid and his responsibility to her. No one is obligated to want or have kids, but if you do have them, you need to treat them right, regardless of your own feelings about parenthood. You don't get to just disclaim that because you don't love their other parent.

Tbh I never understood why she even felt the need to include Claude's potential future kid, then have him be a terrible dad to her because he's not in love with the mom (who's also named after his irl gf, which doesn't sit exactly right with me either) in the first place.
