I kind of fell in love with the Penguins.

Anybody in particular? Granted I am biased, but I think we have a lot of players with very lovable qualities. :)

Hagelin (not sure if my spelling is correct), Sid, and your new coach. Idk when and how rooting for the enemy of my enemy turned into rooting for your guys, but your wins make me so happy. :/

Hagelin's hair is so great. Especially now that it's flowing majestically behind him while he scores goals FOR us rather than against us. :D I usually scoff at hockey flow - I thought Letang's was just depressing and was glad when he cut it - but Hagelin's is something else again.

And I mean, really now. That is just a ridiculous amount of prettiness on one man.

(Is Tampa Bay your enemy? Or is this leftover from the WSH-PIT series?)

Anyway, welcome! :)

I know 0 facts about Hagelin other than the great hockey he is playing, but I want all the Kessel/Hagelin fic.

Did you see someone posted a Hagelin/cyborg!Kessel fic? It was not everything I wanted for the pairing, but it was cute.

I have a complicated relationship with the Penguins that is mostly based on utter loathing, but I really enjoy seeing them destroy my enemies.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Admit Unanon

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I've realized I don't hate the Penguins as much as I'm tired of hearing about them, but I guess on the opposite side of that I could see people ending up liking them because of the constant exposure to them? No shame nonnie.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Admit Unanon

It's such a likable team this year, even compared to last year. I've always loved the core, but some seasons it feels like just a collection of guys with some very unpleasant Eeyore types in the mix. I'm really glad those are all gone.

This year, all the new guys just got on board and meshed SO well. It took like three days and Hagelin was already tying Flower's scarf for him on the plane.

I also think the kids did so much for the room; they've really never had a young group like this, when the kids are considered a serious, integral part of the team by everyone in the organization (not just Captain Sidney "he IS part of the team!" Crosby). It's refreshing.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Admit Unanon

SA

I meant to add that even when Crosby/Malkin/Staal were coming up, there was a toxic collection of vets that didn't take them seriously. They were all young for their Cup run but that division still existed. For example, Guerin was never the biggest Crosby fan and tbh I think that still holds true, just from how he talks about him, but they were linemates and figured that out for the Cup.

I really don't think it exists now, or if it does you don't hear about it as much. Matt Cullen, man. What a hero.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Admit Unanon

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
It's funny, because everyone always talks about how important Guerin's steadying veteran presence was for the team in general and Crosby in particular. I literally read something yesterday that said that Sid needed a Guerin-like person to "hold him accountable" (and it then went on to say that Hornqvist is now fulfilling this role). I actually didn't know that there was a division there.

Re: Matt Cullen, I have to wonder if it makes a difference if your veteran presence can still play hockey. Your description had me thinking of Adams and Scuderi, and you have to wonder if they'd have been a little less negative about things off-ice if they could keep up on-ice.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Admit Unanon

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 01:11 am (UTC)(link)

I hadn't heard anything about a rift between Guerin and Crosby either, besides the fact that they apparently used to squabble all the time, which I think they've both said was par for the course with them and something they enjoyed (and which tbh seems par for the course with Crosby and many of his linemates). I had always heard that the veterans who hated Crosby were guys like Recchi and Leclair.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Admit Unanon

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

I think Guerin is really well-liked among the Penguins and hockey community in general. I also think he thought Crosby was a whiny little bitch that needed to be brought to heel, the way Recchi, Roberts etc. all did. Sid is still friends with all of those guys so clearly that attitude isn't a deal breaker for him, but it's a persistent notion that's lived in the Pens room until pretty damn recently.

And like I said, whatever division existed wasn't enough to derail that Cup team.

I agree about Cullen. The older vets were worried about young guys taking their spots; Cullen has an eye towards retirement and seems to really want to teach these kids as much as possible, in a way that's really encouraging and productive.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Admit Unanon

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a Preds nonnie who was not sorry to see Cullen go, but it had zero to do with his presence in the locker room. He did a lot of good work with Smith and later, Jarnkrok.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Admit Unanon

A fellow Pens fan agrees, especially about the kids. I've been following hockey and the Pens for a couple of years, and the second half of this season is the first time I've seen any of our prospects really prove themselves. Fefore this, it felt like the entire Pens development was composed of magical Olli Maatta, teenage wonder (whom I adore, don't get me wrong), and Beau Bennett, world's saddest first round prospect. So this thing where we get this cohort up who knows each other and also can contribute to actual hockey (first line wing Conor Sheary!) is just really fun.

It seems like that's even being reflected in fic - there's been a ton of Pens rarepair stuff posted recently, a lot of it with the WBS kids and other new acquisitions. I'm enjoying that aspect a lot, too.

Plus the speed is so fun to watch. I used to spend a lot of time going "but why doesn't anyone try to get that puck in the offensive zone? can't they do that??" and now we have this great, speedy forecheck. And those breakaways, wow. *fans self*

Re: Things You Wouldn't Admit Unanon

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad that the team is so close and that the WBS kids were accepted but I still have a really hard time caring about any of them, even though they've done nothing wrong. I'm a strictly "core" person, it seems.

This was true for me. But then Conor Sheary and his glasses showed up.

Maybe in time one or two will endear themselves to you. They are a lot all at once! And, not to cause wank, but I had a friend who looked at the Kuhnhackl-Wilson-Rust infographic when they all signed their new contracts, and she said, "Are those all the same person, but from different angles?" (In fairness, the image quality was not great.)

My team is in the West and I don't really have strong feelings about any teams in the East, but I really like both Crosby and Kessel, so.

I did too. They're quickly becoming my second team.

I would never go so far cause same division and rivalry and my best friend who's kind of at fault for my conflicting emotions would be even more smug (watch this series with me, then you can go back to hating us, she said. And now I don't even dislike Sid anymore, and I'm not sure how that even happened, lol) but I certainly won't mind them doing well in the future when their success doesn't come at the expense of my team. Idk, this feels so weird.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Admit Unanon

I did the exact opposite thing. I started out actively trying to like the Pens, and I ended up loathing every single player on the team, especially Sid, though some took longer to hate than others. The first tinge of dislike set in the very first Pens game I watched. And by the end of the CBJ/Pens series (that was my first playoffs), I knew I wasn't going to be able to like them. Luckily for Pens fans everyone I hate beyond all reason, but also for reasons, gets a Cup.

Oh my, this makes it even funnier because we were kind of the same except I never wanted to root for them.
See, my friend also got me into hockey to begin with, and the first playoff series against the Pens confirmed my dislike (though to be fair I picked my team because of the rivalry as she roots for my soccer teams arch-rival sooo it was an obvious choice, lol). And now this. At least she's happy and she also developed a soft spot for my team over the years.
