Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

Just because some people's erasure/dislike of RL women = misogyny does not mean that encroaching into the private life of a RL woman who has expressly decided to not, at least for the moment, be a public figure in any capacity =/= misogyny.

Cool, but again, this is far from the first prompt to do that, and the concern of the violation of the privacy of a RL woman was not addressed in separation from the problem of a prompt asking for a man to cheat on his RL partner with a man. Also, a lot of the handwringing was over the involvement of a RL baby, which was definitely conflated with the misogyny accusation despite not having anyone to do with it.

Cool, but you agree that:

a) encroaching on her private life, especially since she's now not a public figure, is misogynistic (the fact that other prompts do this is irrelevant)
b) including the kid is creepy as fuck

So why the hell are you still arguing this again?

If you read any of my previous comments, you'd see that my point was that the reaction to this particular prompt was over the top and motivated by some wanky issues other than genuine concern for misogyny and creepiness. So if we're in agreement, you're the one who started unnecessarily arguing with me.

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

So? You agree that it's still misogynistic and creepy. Those points are valid. Who cares what the motivations were? Nice work on being able to mindread the intentions of anon people on the internet, by the way.

I care because I thought the wank not just over the top but made some accusations that were unfair and harmful. It doesn't take "mind reading" to be able to see when an accusation of misogyny is being made in a way that is rooted in legitimate concerns but makes some assumptions and conflations that are unfounded. If you don't care about these things, that's fine -- you don't need to engage in conversation about it and continue to badger me about things that I'm not arguing about.

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

So you're agreeing that the fic is misogynistic and creepy, but you're so concerned about how the (anon) people making that exact point were all un-genuine about their concerns.

What a spectacular waste of time.

Uh, yeah, I do find it concerning when people leverage concepts like misogyny to make accusations and attacks that aren't rooted in real concern about misogyny. I'm not talking about reading people's minds to determine if they are ~genuinely against misogyny, I'm talking about arguments being made based on bad, harmful logic. If you think I'm wasting my time, cool, but what are you doing continuing to try to argue with me, about what? Things we agree on? That I shouldn't care about the things I care about?

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

From: (Anonymous)
You're right. You clearly have too much time on your hands, why am I letting you waste mine? Peace out.

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

From: (Anonymous)
people who accuse others of misogyny because they're protective of their fandom bbs are doing the lord's work, but someone concerned about the harm of misusing something as important and serious as misogyny for fandom wank purposes has too much time on their hands...

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Encroaching on her private life is creepy for reasons that have nothing to do with misogyny. It would be just as creepy if she were a man.

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Violating a women's privacy isn't an issue entirely free from sexism. It's universally creepy, but people do tend to feel more entitled to a woman's private life.

Wait, so does this mean it's creepy to write about Paul Kariya now, too? He has removed himself very firmly from the public eye, after all.

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Is this because he's suffering from post-concussion syndrome? Or just doesn't like any media attention? (Or gay? Not being shippy here; I'm genuinely asking.)

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

From: (Anonymous)
He's not gay. He doesn't like media attention. I don't know if he still has concussion issues. I would assume not since he goes surfing.

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Haven't there always been gay rumors surrounding him, though? (This is another genuine question, from a different anon.)

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Yes, because he wasn't married.

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Actual gay rumors or doesn't act like an 80's movie villain jock = must be gay rumors?

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Fair enough. Is he married? His wikipedia doesn't say.

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

From: (Anonymous)
No, but he has a long time girlfriend who gets mentioned in articles occasionally.

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Ah, OK. Tx.

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Wait, what articles? I've read a lot of articles about Paul Kariya and have never seen that. (Not that I know anything about his personal life to contradict it, of course -- I'm just curious.) The only "unmarried but has a long-term gf who is occasionally mentioned" dude I usually think of is Jagr.

Here's the first link that came up when I googled Paul Kariya and girlfriend. It's from several years ago, but maybe that's the same one? I don't know who the anon meant, but I remember Teemu Selanne mentioned having visited Paul and his girlfriend or having plans to visit them, not sure which, when people were side-eyeing Kariya not being at the jersey retirement.

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

From: (Anonymous)
It seems weird that you'd throw in "or gay" there like anyone here would know, lol. From the outside, how would that look any different from "doesn't like any media attention"?

Re: Kinkmeme Discussion

From: (Anonymous)
Well, I was going with 'X age and not married,' because I didn't know he had a longterm female partner. That was it.
