Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)I mean, yeah, a lot of those gross ideas were also repeated in mainstream media. I... want all forms of media, including fanfiction, to be less fucked up. Child friendly? No. Hell, slap a choose not to warn on it and I'll quietly grumble myself away. Gross ideas in media perpetuate gross ideas in society, and I'll stand by the fact that I would rather that particular kind of fic went away. Kinda like how I'd rather people stopped writing about Patrick Kane. If people want to write rape kink or so-and-so falls in love with their rapist or whatever, for be it from me to stop you. Hell, I don't know what your circumstances are. But I will wish you would be upfront about what you're doing, and if you seem to think what you're writing is a fluffy happy relationship fic I will cringe and wish it didn't exist. I will cringe extra hard thinking about kids reading it. Sorry. Tbh, I think the happy middle ground is good tagging. In order for YKINMKATO to work, you kinda have to be clear what the content of a fic is.
I don't know where to find the middle ground between "freedom" and "media not being completely disgusting". I find "The Big Bang Theory" to be annoying and sexist, and I will be upfront about that, because when it gets cancelled it would be nice if enough people said "oh good, that was sexist" that they don't just make another identical show. If we're never allowed to say what bugs us in fanfic, how can it ever change and evolve? I have never, ever, left a comment on a fic that disgusted me or even talked about one specifically with others, but I'm not gonna deny I'm happy to see a reduction in the amount of fluffy actually-rape fic or "canon girlfriend is an evil harpy who gets what was coming to her" stuff that was every other fic when I was a kid.
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)I mean, I like some dubious stuff myself. I'm sure in ten years folks will be telling me my humiliation kink is fucked up and abusive and coming for my (very clearly tagged and warned) dubious consent spanking fic. So it's not like I think we need to eradicate all things problematic-- I just want fandom in general to do more thoughtful critical thinking.
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)The kind of stuff that gets passed off as 'thoughtful critical thinking' often devolves into name calling, attacks, and telling people they should get shot or die (as is happening in another fandom right now).
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)There's raising awareness, and then there's saying some subjects are just off-limits regardless of handling, and then there's ignoring the very specific context of kink fic.
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)I have the exact same feelings re: Sons of Anarchy and Jessica Jones. And no, please don't stop writing about fucked up stuff! It's just that (once pervasive) supposedly fluffy fic that contained "romantic" stalking, sex where one person is so drunk they forget about it while the other is stone cold sober, etc that bothers me.
Using a silly fictional example, some of my favourite HP fic back in the day was Marauders stuff where Sirius has a lot of prejudice going into Hogwarts, stuff where he mistreats muggleborns and has to learn to outgrow his parents ideals. Fics where his parents aren't written as cartoon villains, but very bad people who nonetheless care about their son. Using that as a parallel for racism, I don't want racism in fics to go away! Just the unconscious stuff that no one acknowledges as racism & that I feel is actively harmful, like writing all black characters as caricatures and sidekicks. But again, I'm not going to go around forcing that preference on people-- it's just more of a wish, I guess.
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)That right there is your problem, though. If it's unconscious, it means the person isn't writing it on purpose and certainly isn't going to tag for it. The problem here isn't fandom at all, just people. And we can certainly wish for people to be more aware of what they write as well as of their personal biases, etc, but that is a lifelong journey for all of us (some making more progress than others, granted).
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)I don't think you'll get any pushback for wishing that more authors were aware of their unconscious biases and prejudices. But that comes from discussions and call-outs, not preemptively saying x trope can't get written, which doesn't allow for varying treatments of said tropes or varying contexts (kink is a different thing). And honestly, I'm pretty dubious of tumblr's claim for creating more awareness, because it's all so wrapped up in what come downs to ship and trope preferences. I think tumblr is very aware of how to use language borrowed from social justice movements to argue for the ethical correctness of their favorite character/trope/ship and a bit short on nuance or actual willingness to confront problems within themselves or the factions they belong to. Like, stopping an infidelity fic from being written? Not actually doing anything about a purely fluffy story that treats women like shit but portrays true, uncomplicated love between fandom faves and therefore gets nice comments.
Granted, part of my cynicism was formed during a minor wank in Destiel fandom, in which someone wrote a racist fic (turning character A into a plantation slaveowner who killed 200 slaves to start off the story, with no one in the story giving a shit about this, before slave-murdering dude gets an epic fairy tale romance with another white man), and tumblr fandom rallied around the author, saying the story didn't have any issues because the story was just being historically accurate and the author was a nice person.
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)I agree with everything you've said here. I don't even think the prompt in question was misogynistic at all (in poor taste? Yes. But the OP was pretty clear they wanted a nuanced portrayal of infidelity that actually showed Anna's feelings & personhood, which doesn't scream misogynist to me.) Also, I've always found including Danny Briere's kids in fic to be creepy as fuck but it seems to be fandom-acceptable so I was confused by "using Geno's baby in fic is disgusting!"
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)Honestly, I don't even go on the kink meme any more, partly because of personal triggers making it not worth it, partly because of a personal conflict. I just defend the principles upon which it was founded, lol.
There are a lot of things I personally find creepy, including the use of RL kids in fic, but there's definitely been precedent.
