Thanks for sharing this link, I was a little confused as this happened before I joined deke

Bless you, nonnie, I hadn't seen that before.

DA I think it's easier to have those kind of threads in the off season.

Re: Podcasts

(Anonymous) 2016-06-04 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
There's Two Girls, One Puck, and What's Icing hockey podcasts done by women.

They're okay, but neither updates frequently enough to keep pace with the season, and it becomes more obviously dated during the playoffs.

It actually bothers me that all the hockey podcasts done by women that I've listened to are so bad. Not in their content, but as podcasts. None of them keeps a regular posting schedule, which is actually important for a podcast. They all have terrible sound. If there are two people, one is loud and the other can't be heard. None of them seem to edit.

It like they’re treating podcast in like posting an unedited, rough draft of a fic whenever they feel like it, when podcasts are such a different format. For hockey podcasts, the dudes are just doing better.

Yeah, ia. Ladies, I WANT to support you, but man, at least buy a better mic?

IKR? Like, they have cool and interesting things to say. It would be super awesome if I could actually hear them.

AKA Rupp & Whitney wax poetic on the subject of Sidney Crosby.

On a *hockey* level, somebody could probably do something interesting with the "4th rounder drafted in his last year of eligibility has consistently overachieved" narrative. I can't imagine he's ever going to be Norris-quality, but everything I read is that he *has* turned into a fairly solid d-guy.

Although including this would obviously take more nuance, there were a bunch of bottom-feeders on boards and such whose general message was "you're drafting a dude named Martinez just to draw Hispanic/Latinx fans" so including a little bit about that would make me happy.

(His paternal grandfather is Spanish and his paternal grandmother is Mexican according to wiki. What *he* IDs as is anybody's guess unless some nonnie knows, and I have no idea if he's fluent in Spanish but I don't think so. I doubt his ethnic background/last name was a major factor in drafting him, but given the LA area demographics I *can* easily see it being a minor point in his favor for once.)

And of course, he scored the WCF and Stanley Cup winning goals in the 2014 Cup run, which plus the obviously hot factor should be *perfect* for "you won us a Cup" celebratory porn.

I imagine people looking for analysis on the Sharks were pretty disappointed by this, but I think the imbalance is pretty natural given the guys both played with the Pens at some point - with Sid, even.

Anyway, I loved it. This was probably my favorite bit:

You know what I love though? Sid is a prick to play against right now. Did you see Thornton cross-checking his helmet off, trying to get a rise out of him? Sid’s just standing there like the Terminator. No expression. No retaliation.

Re: Fic discussion

(Anonymous) 2016-06-04 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I read it too, and + 1 on basically everything you said.

*****************************

Now I'm tempted to go reread the "Sad Ryan Suter" where Suter and Parise accidentally formed a really unstable platonic soulbond and signing together was basically a medical necessity. Endgame pairing is Suter/Weber, I think it's by dragons_and_angels.

(Alternatively, I want the ot3 porn epilogue to McSpot's "let's exchange the experience" where both Parise and Shea can do weird things to people's memories. Or kinky but enthusiastically consented to xeno porn where predator!Shea eats out rule 63 Parise and Ryan's being amused by the whole thing.)

New part up (gen backstory, Jori Lehtera is an awesome friend, but I am *so* glad I know this version of Vladi gets a pretty happy ending down the line.)

CW: Vladi *is* obliquely talking about suicide (no attempt or detailed planning) and is also clearly depressed in most of this. The author's note that "this is not a happy story" is accurate, so be aware of that.

I think the most obvious factor is quantity. There are very few women-fronted podcasts, and they're terrible. There are many men-fronted podcasts, and most of them are terrible, there's just enough for five or ten of them to be really good. They get into it thinking they can throw an hour of them shooting the shit on the internet with zero equipment, zero editing, and worst of all, zero prep, and then they don't get better.

You really can't record once a month on a Sunday and get it uploaded on Wednesday and expect your content to be relevant or interesting. There have probably been three games since you recorded, ffs! Very few people can get away with posting garbage to talkshoe once a blue moon and maintain an audience (I think the puckcast finally put us out of our misery). Sure, podcasting is a hobby, but it's also work.

Yeah, considering that timeliness is pretty important, not presenting your podcast as 'this is about game recaps,' and having it be more about season trends, stats, narratives, etc. makes sense. As does having a clear schedule.

I've guest hosted on a (non-sports) podcast, and sound quality does make some difference, but I think editing makes more of a difference as does having clear segments and not over-talking.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-04 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Also you've got more podcasts fronted by men which have at least some financial support which allows them to invest in gear and dedicate a set amount of time to it as an endeavor.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-04 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, the kind of mics needed for better sound run between 100 and 200 bucks, so not to count other people's money, but it's not completely financially untenable for someone who owns, say, a laptop. I would think having a server would be the higher cost.

Personally if I was approximately negative dollars from something $200 would be hard to justify, my laptop is justifiable because it need it for work i.e. something which I actually make money off.

Sure, but if it's a sincere hobby (like, frequent podcasting), it makes sense in the way to buying a bunch of team gear makes sense. At the very least, not using built-in mics on a laptop makes a huge difference.

From what I've seen it's sort of complicated for him. I'm gonna try and find the interview from a few years ago where he talks about it when I get on a real computer, but he sounded fairly uncomfortable being IDed as a Latinx hockey player. (Also I think wiki might be wrong about the grandmother, but I have to find the interview first)

I think the amount of hockey podcasts receiving sponsorship money is pretty negligible, and there are only a couple who have access to studios. I haven't done a podcast, just podficcing, and I've never spent more than $40 on a mic, it's all about sound levels and making sure you don't have an echo. And I agree with DA, it's something you spend money on. I'm not expecting anyone to go out and buy studio mics with all the associated equipment, but if it's worth doing my philosophy is that it's worth doing well.

Any idea about Auston Matthews? He's apparently of Mexican descent, though I have no idea how he IDs.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-06-04 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, you can get decent mics for a lot less that will still give adequate sound. But listening and actively doing a sound check, then making adjustments is more valuable than an expensive mic.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-06-04 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
If you have specific recs for mics, that would be great - I've priced some out, but apparently wasn't looking at the right places. /is definitely not starting a sports podcast

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-06-04 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
This exactly. 95% of everything is crap; the problem is that when it comes to hockey podcasts by woman, "everything" is a small enough number that the 5% of non-crap equates to like two or three podcasts.
