Sign ups for the poly exchange end Saturday (it looks like some good writers have already signed up).

I think your first paragraph is right on. Once a few fics get established early in a fandom's history, it's basically impossible for anything else to catch up. Not to say no other fics can reach 1k kudos, since that's obviously not the case, but that those original first few fics are just always getting more entrenched as the top-kudosed stuff, drawing attention from other newer fics. The fact that the two most-kudosed authors are thefourthvine and thehoyden adds to that, I think, since they're BNFs in their own right.

Alex Prewitt is doing a profile of the two bb goaltenders in the ECF, including interviews with their teammates, which yields us this gem about the WBS kids:

As someone on my TL said, these players continue to be designed exactly to fannish preferences.

Pens are starting Murray tonight, and on one hand that feels like a reasonable choice, but OTOH Flower posted a better save % two nights ago than Murray had in several of his starts against TBL, and if you were only going to give him one night (plus a period) to get himself going after a concussion and seven weeks off, why did you bother?

More personally, I'm just really sad for Flower. He's been really solid for the last several playoff runs, and that was not at all representative of his recent play, but it'll be just one more thing to point to for people still banging the "Fleury's bad in the playoffs" drum.

I remember someone predicting during the Washington series that if the Pens waffle on their goalies, what'll happen is that Fleury will be cold and underperform, then when they put Murray back he'll suffer from his confidence, leading to an eventual loss of the series from those losses.

Bad situation for the goalies, but the conference finals are the wrong place to be indecisive about them. I don't see the Pens recovering, especially when you add in their injuries.

I think fundamentally the goalie situation isn't even the problem - neither of them has been good at all against TBL this season despite good numbers overall, which suggests it's at least partly an issues of TBL getting better shots on them, which makes it an issue with, you know, the rest of the team as well. And certainly several of the games they've lost in this series have been down to the skaters being outplayed.

Oh definitely, I wasn't meaning to put all the blame on the goalies. Even as the series started, my feeling was that Tampa played a speedy game like the Pens, and it's a pretty even match up. In those scenarios, goalies stealing games and generally not being flustered or rusty along with general momentum will make a big difference.

I'll be pretty impressed if the Pens turn this around, but there's too much going against them in a series where they can't afford these kinds of stumbles.

Latta's end of the season review is making me unexpectedly emotional. Getting scratched so often must be tough, articles about that always get to me...
I've seen comments elsewhere say that "he can stay on the team and be the healthy scratch next season too" but I don't think Washington would go for that (or that it would be a good situation anyway).

I'm clinging to optimism. At the very least, I think we have a good chance of taking it game seven.

But even if we don't, this has been a hell of a run, and these Pens have been by far the most fun to watch since I started watching them a couple of years go. And signs point to us keeping almost everyone for next year. The future is bright. :)

NA

I wondered at the decision to put Fleury in, as it seems like the potential problems there are obvious - I think a lot of people predicted this happening, and if we saw it there's no way the coaching staff didn't. Maybe they thought Murray's confidence was already shot from being pulled? Idk.

I don't think confidence will be an issue for Murray (and I think that's one reason why Sullivan picked him). Earlier in the season he showed he can let in a couple of soft goals and not let it affect him mentally going forward in a game. After he was pulled, he gave a pretty level-headed interview about the goals he let in, and he didn't sound like he was down on himself at all -- he's always very frank about when he feels that goals were his fault or not.

I love how frank he is about it, really. His description of the last two goals in game four as "a couple of horseshit bounces" made me smile.

In so many ways he seems just bizarrely down to earth, for a goalie. He doesn't believe in having superstitions, he can assess his own play without getting down on himself, he's all about shaking off past play and getting ready for the next thing.

Does anyone have any sense of who Olli Maatta hangs out with during the season? He never played in WBS, so I don't imagine he'd really fit with the WBS cohort, and he's still so much younger than everyone else on the team.

I love this fic. I think I'm going to go and re-read it.

I hate the Sharks too and it's only partially because of Twitter.

Re: What's Up With Your Team - Third Round and Counting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-24 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Could it be that coaching staff ffeels like the team might play more confident with Murray in net as opposed to Fleury who's been out for so long and might still be a little rusty? Not that any of the goals last game were really on him and the bigger problem seemed to be letang not playing very good plus no Daley.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-24 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Sullivan said something to that effect this morning, that Murray had a flaming effect on the team. Letang hasn't looked right since that hit in game 1 :(

Sure, but then why put Fleury in in the first place?

Re: What's Up With Your Team - Third Round and Counting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-24 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea, and thought it was a weird decision to begin with.
But maybe they felt like Murray needed some rest and that Tampa had figured him out somewhat plus Fleury looked good when he played that third period before (while of course he didn't face many shots then)?
And then that didn't work out o well so back to the guy who got them this far?

I really don't know, and in retrospect it's always easy to think "if only", my team made what seemed like an odd choice as well and it did not work out, too.

Is flaming meant to be calming there?

The K/T fic that has the most kudos since the allegations is The Sweetest Sounds I'll Ever Hear by Linksy which has 911. So I don't think it's completely out of the realm of possibility that it will hit 1000 in time since it was only posted in Feb/March this year.

Re: tags, I also don't need tags saying who tops and bottoms in the fic. I honestly don't care as long as it's well written.
