#24 – Not Sure If Serious or Playing Dumba

Would you think that someone changing their last name would warrant a press conference, or would it be a couple of press releases + guy saying on twitter 'Yo, it's not Bob Smith anymore, it's Bob Jones'?

It's not the exactly an ideal example as he, you know, later went to jail for conspiracy to commit murder, but Mike Danton changed his last name to Danton from Jefferson while he was with the Devils, so you might be able to find old press releases online and see how it was handled.

As a newish hockey fan that name didn't ring a bell, so I went and did some googling, and holy shit that whole debacle is one of the weirdest things I've read all month (which is saying something).

When college players have done it (Zane McIntyre, I believe) it's been the latter.

Oh nonnie if you're in to crazy stories about NHL players you should likewise check out Bobby Ryan's story. (It tangentially fits with the name situation. Though less so probably than you're looking for.)

This is usually how it goes also when they decide on a different pronunciation. For example Andrej Sekera was Andrej Se-kera with the Kings and is now Andrej Sekara. (Oy I have no idea if that made sense in text form. Basically. He changed how his name is pronounced when he signed with the oilers)

Yep, that's exactly it. The idea that everyone who disagrees with you, even on a substantive issue like sexual assault, is inherently evil to the core, is something that people like to cling to because it's easy.

Also: does anyone seriously give a fuck about the cocaine (3+ years ago)? Is that really a pedestal people on this meme are standing on? Because by many accounts, it's not uncommon in the NHL. I don't really give a fuck about Toews, but that's the last thing I'd condemn him for.

This hooker girlfriend shit is so fucking slut-shamey. I don't like Toews, but leave his girlfriend alone.

I think it's easy to point at the coke thing. I don't like it (or any drugs), but he's squarely in the demographic where I'd expect widespread social use. It's not even on the list of things I'd criticize him for.

See, in those cases, I just assume they're too busy trying to find a place in the NHL/ thinking it's too much hassle to correct other people about their name. (NHL announcers and broadcasters have a spotty record.)

Remember Grossmann? He played his whole freaking career before the Flyers with only one n on his jersey. These things happen.

Yeah, cocaine is one of those things where I have zero interest in it, but as long as you don't let it take over your life or pressure others to use it, I'm mostly just going to shrug.

Oh totally. And I also think sometimes it becomes too much of a hassle to convince everyone that "no that really isn't how you say my name, despite the fact that that's how you've been saying it forever." And some guys just wait til their in a new market to say "aaaactually it's pronounced *****"

Or you have cases like Simon Despres who basically instructs everyone to pronounce his name incorrectly because it's easier than the alternative.

Neither Tom or Andre wished Latts a happy birthday publicly and now life as we know it is over.

The last name change question and the answers to it reminded me that there are media guides published by the teams before every season and before the playoffs. (Someone mentioned pronunciations and this stuff is where I've learned most of them.)

They're gigantic info dumps with literally everything you would want to know about a team and its players. Most of the pages are taken up by an exhaustive team history - like their franchise records playing in other arenas, etc. Milestones and records for miles and miles too.

But they also have profiles for their players, mostly hockey-related except for stuff like this -

Roman Josi's Background section:
Nickname “Yos”… Favorites include Rolf and Daughters (Nashville restaurant), Open by Andre Agassi (book), Steve Aoki (musician), Ibiza (vacation destination)… Enjoys playing tennis and would like to be an “oldies tennis pro” after his hockey career is completed… Considers being dropped into the ocean at night to be his greatest fear, and drinking chocolate milk to be his guilty pleasure… Adam Sandler would be his choice to play him in a movie.

(By the way, not all teams have them available on their site, so some nonnies might be disappointed trying to Google-fu them.)

Someone on reddit usually makes them available at the beginning of every season, so you can probably search there for uploads of old ones.

It's bad that when I read that I just think that Mike wants to get Latts full of eggs, isn't it?
