I will accept any of these options as well. Please and thank you.

Just dropping this here cause it's relevant to like 30% of this thread at this point, but I couldn't decide which subthead to leave it in.

This is the most ridiculous/adorable thing I've ever read.

This also makes me miss Shea's cuddle check anew. What could have been, fandom!

MCU fandom makes me wish AO3 had a search system like reddit's where I could see the most-kudos'd fics posted in the last 30 days or last week or something. There's way too many posted to the tag each day and unlike hockey, I can't pretty much tell from the summary if it's a good or a bad fic. And to add to that that I get super annoyed when my fave character is painted in a negative light, which doesn't help.

Hamilton fandom makes me feel vaguely uncomfortable for reasons I have never been able to articulate properly.

You can definitely do that, I can track down a tutorial if you can't find it by googling.

I read a few things, but nothing really knocked my socks off. People seemed kinda into feminizing Hamilton, and I get that RL Hamilton was described as somewhat feminine, but I didn't really get that vibe from the musical. As far as actually being an active participant in Hamilton fandom ... that seems like it could be stressful.

Because they're quick to anger and cry racism and white washing at the drop of a hat. Nevermind that all the founding fathers were white, they're still upset if the show continues on with more white people cast in roles that were originally played by PoC depicting white people (Not replacing the whole cast with white people, but there's natural burnout and moving on to other projects). ??? I just typed it out and I am tired.

You can find fics posted in the last 30 days that have the most kudos, but you can't filter or search directly for "stuff that has had the biggest recent increase in kudos," which is what ayrt sounds like they want?

Is there really much danger of more white people being cast in Hamilton? It seems like part of the point was to make the Revolutionaries PoC, so they'd probably audition non-white actors, or at the very least audition multiple ethnicities.

Can you really? I honest to god did not know this.

I didn't even know all that. I guess just the fact that the fandom even exists makes me feel uncomfortable. Glass houses, considering I'm an active participant on a hockey rpf meme, but still.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Are you made uncomfortable by the fact that it's sort of RPF? That's the only conclusion I can draw from your reference to hockey RPF, although Hamilton's pretty far removed from RL.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yep! it's actually simpler than I remember, so I'll just explain it: go to advanced search, in the Date box put "< 30 days", put your preferred flavor of MCU fandom in the Fandom box, and then go down to the bottom of the search page and choose sort by kudos.

There's not that much danger, no, but hint to some of more vocal parts of the fandom that one or two of the roles might have white actors instead in the next run and they go BESERK. That's why Hamilton fandom is tiresome. Also, because I see proponents of "if you're OLD WHY ARE YOU IN FANDOM EW" where Old is defined as 25.

Does Hamilton fandom's existence just seem unpatriotic to you? I mostly avoid it because I am 100% a Burr fan and have been since the 8th grade and then Hamilton fans started talking smack about my Historical Fave and I am rankled.

I find Hamilton fandom uncomfortable because it depicts Hamilton as manic pixie dream nympho. Which, while I might even find that a convincing characterization for LMM, is not what I got from the musical.

Re person who thinks the fandom gets too mad about the potential of white casting "never mind that the founding fathers were white".....your comment reveals a lot about you, that's all I'm saying.

Also, you're totally missing the spirit of LMM's work, LMM in general, and what he's done (and what he wants to do) for the stage.

You can do a lot of searches on AO3 that people think you can't. Most just require going to the advanced search page or learning the correct keywords for the "search within results" box. Here's a pretty comprehensive rundown I just found - https://arduinna.dreamwidth.org/60114.html .

I still haven't even listened to Hamilton because I can't bring myself to get into a thing knowing the main character dies stupidly at the end.

Aaron Burr's my favorite character, nonnie, and it was his song that made me listen to the entire thing!

The musical is probably only hard for Thomas Jefferson fans.

I do think it's a bit unquestioning with its "yay America" stance, and I am not comfortable lionizing anyone from history, though that might be more fandom than musical, and every female character in the musical is either in love with Hamilton or fucking him. But it's also really good, and each and every song is an earworm and so dense that you discover a bunch of new fun things every time you listen.

Which is all to say that I'm glad you're not in the fandom. Please stay out.

Maybe, I guess. Like I said, it's really hard to put a finger on it. Thinking about it, it might be how far removed it is from actual RPF that is my issue. Which doesn't make a lot of sense. I feel like a lot of people who aren't really up on their American history are going to get the impression that a lot of the founding fathers were better people than they were, especially by modern standards of good person vs. bad person. This post still doesn't explain it right. I might be too academically minded for the whole Hamilton thing, I can't turn off the part of my brain screaming about how not accurate it all is.

I have seen some things like "white people shouldn't be allowed to watch Hamilton," which seems exhausting enough.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or genuine.
