I had acne too. And I wonder if that's why I'm so bothered by it.

Also, stuff like proactiv is not actually that great to use if you have really bad acne. It works in the short term, but t'll eventually just make things worse.

When the Sharp trade happened I was telling people Daley could still be an effective player, he just needed the right system, so I will join you in the smug corner. Though I, too, am leaning Sharks.

If we're sharing petty playoff feelings, a petty part of me would love to see the Penguins win just to spite real-life-Big-Bang-Theory-character Wil Wheaton.

tbh I was a little sad that he was still in the West; I felt like he could do good things in the Eastern Conference. And look at him now!

I also was a little bothered by it because we try so hard to make female media members more than their appearance. And then she made it about appearance.

I didn't love the remark (I'm sensitive about acne, too, as someone who was made fun of for it as a teenager and still has a lot of skin problems), but I think it's important to recognize that judging female media members on appearance is fundamentally different from someone, even a media member, making fun of a player's acne. I think a lot of the more moralizing responses she's getting are missing the mark in a similar way. Matt Murray isn't systemically oppressed in any way because of acne, whereas for a female athlete, it would be commented on constantly, and a female media member probably couldn't get a job, at least not where her face would be shown. Hockey twitter fandom makes fun of plenty of guys for their appearance without this kind of response.

That being said, I do think it's a little mean-spirited and not very professional -- neither of which is totally out of line with my impression of Jen Neale anyways.

I also feel like the way she's reacting right now is just... childish. Like, congrats, you said a shitty thing (and I stand by my feeling that I would think it was just as shitty if a dude had said it). Stop doubling down, maybe apologize, and then move on with your life instead of spending time retweeting a mix of people who are politely disagreeing with you and people who are being sexist assholes. I'm getting kind of a "I'm not like those other girls, I'm one of the cool girls" vibe from the whole situation, and I can't quite put my finger on why.

A fair point, this meme's predecessor pretty clearly indicates that deke absolutely would if it weren't a freezable offense.

I think the original tweet was much better left untweeted, but I'm not going to fault anyone's response to the kind of stuff she was getting tweeted at her, whatever that response might be. I'm not going to judge her for being insufficiently detached in the face of sexist slurs and personal attacks.

I guess in the end I'm solidly in the "be better" camp. And she absolutely isn't.

And I'm super sorry that people are being dicks to her. But also I don't think other people's (most horrible) response to her comment excuses the original comment.

I don't think the horrible responses excuse the original comment, which I said I didn't like either. You're totally within your rights to think she can and should be better. But her making fun of Matt Murray's appearance is not at all equivalent to people judging women on looks because Matt Murray isn't a woman. They are both bad, but bad in different ways and to different degrees. And it's not fair to her to say "we make a big deal about not judging female media members on looks, and yet here is this female media member...". You can't hold her to a higher standard and condemn her mistakes as worse because she is a woman.

Oh hey! Apparently I phrased poorly (which isn't surprising because I'm deking while mostly asleep). I absolutely agree with you that it isn't equivalent. I guess I don't know how better to convey my issue with it.

This was an interesting one. There's some stuff I really didn't like that, as other nonnies said, felt straight out of 2012 - certain aspects of Sid's characterizations, the handshake line after every game, Sidney Crosby's uniquely shitty dad, etc. - but there were also a lot of enjoyable elements here that I don't usually see in hockey RPF fics.

Maybe it's just because I'm one of those nonnies who want more dealing with homophobia in fic, but it felt like this one went into it in a lot of ways that a lot of fics skip. There were the bits about the perception of a gay teammate as predatory, and whether it was "really" gay if you're the penetrating partner, and how even the accepting teammates can be kind of shitty and lukewarm about it without meaning to. The bit about the card with "spare me the details" in it is what I'm thinking of - that felt very frustrating and true to my own experiences.

Obviously it's not a 100% realistic fic, or even a 40% realistic fic - the heart of it is misunderstandings stacked on top of soulbonds and fuck-or-die. It's tropey through and through. But I like tropey stuff too, so that was fun, even though I was rolling my eyes at some of the melodramatic stuff about how much of a ~martyr Sid is, and I feel like the more realistic bits fit without being jarring.

Obviously this stuff is all subjective, but I felt like this was a solid fic for the specific fandom genre it falls into. A solid 8/10 fanon SidGeno fic; an enjoyable read that could use a little tightening up at the more ridiculous parts.

I feel kind of bad for the Sharks. It's finally their big moment, and the Bay Area is going to be mostly paying attention the NBA finals instead.

I have one team that's my primary team, that I would buy merchandise for etc (in the West). Then I have an Eastern Conference team. Then I have a bunch of other teams that I enjoy watching but don't root for them unless they're playing a team that I hate.

But overall I just enjoy watching hockey? And will watch whatever I can.

This is pretty much me also, except my Western team I love more than my Eastern team. There are other players I enjoy but those are my two teams.

Ha yes I saw his tweets on my non-hockey feed and I'm like first of all who do I follow that is retweeting Wil Wheaton and second get your grubby hands off the Sharks.

At least it seems like the games are going to be on alternating nights from now on. Also if the Bay Area ends up with two championship parades this summer I'm not going to feel too bad for them.
