Not my team, but a whole new team! Looks like Las Vegas is a go. For some reason people think the name of the new team will be the Black Knights.

I don't get the name. What does that have to do with Las Vegas? Is there a reference here I'm missing?

Knights as in Vegas nights

Is that a thing? And if so, the Vegas Black Nights would be 10000% cooler than the Black Knights.

I don't understand what you mean lol.
Vegas Nights= a reason or the reason to visit Vegas, Knights is a sports appropriate pun on that

But 'Knight' is really over-used as a mascot, aside from having nothing whatsoever to do culturally with the American SW. If Vegas Nights are a reason to visit Las Vegas, then own it! Name the team that! The imagery is way more vivid and specific to the locale.

And no, I don't think the Jack => Knight connection counts; if anything, Knights bring chess to mind, not playing cards.

I thought the same! Just name then "Nights", rock it like Minnesota! (And do a funky logo, too!)

I personally was into the idea of something alien/Area 51 related because I would almost definitely buy hockey merch with a spaceship on it. But it seems inevitable that we're probably getting a cheesy Vegas pun instead. At least it's not like the "wedding elvises" or something.

Oh, that could have been really fun! Maybe a bit too esoteric? But they could have gone so many fun places with it.

That wouldn't have happened simply because the Vegas AAA baseball team is already named the 51s and their logo is an alien head.

The owner went to West Point or something.

I think the Knight has to do with the Jack in a deck of cards. The Vegas Black Jacks just doesn't have the same ring as Black Knights.

I doubt it, I don't think most people even realize the jack is supposed to be a knight so that connection seems tenuous.

I've seen "Aces" tossed around a lot by fans as the preferred option which kind of makes me laugh because it's the name of the team in check please. I doubt the serious sports dude journalists talking about it are aware of that though (or ARE they).

(it's the name of the Vegas team in check please because it's been a front runner and is also the author's favorite name for an expansion team)

My main reaction was: is there a Black Knight at Excalibur's Tournament of Kings? Or is that just at Medieval Times?

I would have expected something card related, which Knight isn't, quite.

I'm really sceptical about their success attendance-wise and I felt bad because my first thought was "maybe Carolina won't have the lowest attendance anymore then", lol.

Not sure that's the best name for a team in the same division as the Kings. Especially since their colors are apparently going to be similar.

I saw someone suggest the Black Aces. Which I kind of love.

I like it, but "black ace" already means something in hockey - it's the guys who get called up to hang around in the latter rounds of a cup run.

NAYRT but that would be exactly why I'd love it, even though there's no way they'd actually be the scrappy underdogs/odds and ends roster that name might imply.

Also would require hockey to have a sense of humor, so...

The best players on the team would be the rest of the league's fourth defenseman and backup goalies, to say nothing of the leftovers at forward. I'd think that would qualify them for scrappy underdog status.

Don't forget old and overpayed vets to bring them up to the salary floor!

ayrt

Yep. That's why I like it. Because with the expansion draft you're basically assembling a team of Black Aces just from all the NHL teams instead of AHL affiliates.

Saying a little prayer for the first black Knight, may he have endless patience and a ready blocking finger.

The owner's high school alma mater was the Black Knights and he's already incorporated the company he used for the team bid under that name.
