#24 – Not Sure If Serious or Playing Dumba

This is the twenty-fourth post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

THE RULES

That seems like the point of the fest, and the target audience is people who know and care about these people. Not to say that there won't be a lot of Sid-related stuff, but it sounds like your issue is just that the fest's interests are fundamentally different from yours. Prompt rules that allow pairings like Hagelin/Zuccarello and Geno/Ovi -- i.e., rarepairs with non-Pens players -- seem like they would be more likely to result in a glut of Sid fic, because people would prompt a ton of Sid rarepairs like Sid/Nate, Sid/Claude (does that qualify as rare anymore), a million other Sid-pairings that people have occasionally made noise about..

Agreed. It seems pretty clear that the point of the fest is for the Pens specifically, not fic about players in other contexts who happen to have played for the Pens at some point. It's fine to want those things, just not in this particular event.

Yeah, I mean, I, too, would ~love if all fests had rules that people couldn't prompt or write things that I don't care for, but alas, for some reason people tend to organize fests around the interests of their communities/fanbases and not my particular preferences!

(I think the rules do actually allow for any former Pens players, but Zuccarello and Ovi are not those.)

AYRT - Yes, I do understand it being set up that way to cut out the Sid related cross team fic, and I get why they would want to do that to keep a tighter Pens focus.

But you could prompt Taylor Crosby/Amanda Kessel under those rules though,(which would be interesting) and it just seems a bit odd that you can do that but not some of the other ships that would result in interesting stories.

I guess we see what comes out when the prompts are revealed, and then what gets filled.

Why? It's a Pens fest created by a Pens fan for Pens fans. Why should such a fest ban the Pens' most popular player and allow non-Pens player just so the fic will be more interesting to someone who is self-described as not much of a Pens person? I bet theladyscribe would love to see Taylor Crosby/Amanda Kessel fic.

I don't know why you think it's odd that their preferences are not your preferences or that they would choose a tighter focus rather than a looser focus. There's an entire exchange just for Sid/Geno - do you think it's odd that the exchange excludes Hagelin/Kessel, even though Hagelin/Kessel could result in interesting stories? "Would result in interesting stories" is not the only metric for choosing how to set up a fest.

AYRT - It just surprised me as a way to set up a rare pair fest. I just wasn't expecting it to be the IntraPens rare pair exchange.

But it's totally their prerogative to set it up how they wish and I hope it goes well for all the participants.

I don't understand the surprise when the fest is literally called the "Penguins Rarepair Fest" and not the "Interesting Non-Crosby Rarepair Fest" -- nor why your surprise would lead you to critique the prompting rules instead of realizing that it's clearly a fest catering to preferences besides yours. The rules are extremely logical for what the fest is and who it is for.
