I really don't get the issue with goalie chanting. It's like interactive crowd chirping, and in the mildest form possible - just repeating someone's name to taunt them for their performance. Wouldn't admit unanon because everyone I know thinks it's the WORST THING EVER.

The worst thing you can legitimately say about it is that it's usually stupid, but people realy need to understand that goalies are not super sensitive snowflakes who melt under the first signs of stress. It's literally their job to handle psychological pressure and some dumb taunting isn't going to break them.

It's always the teams that don't do it whose fans whine about it, though. If they aren't worried about their precious goalies, then why do they care if the other team does it?

I find it kind of annoying when a crowd chants at a goalie who's not having a bad game (and that includes my own fanbase), but it's pretty harmless in the grand scheme of things and I'm not really mortally offended by it like some people seem to be. I agree that people definitely overestimate the supposed psychological edge that it gives their team, though. Pretty sure a goalie at this level isn't going to break because you chanted his name or told him he sucked.

I've heard 3 variants of goalie chants. I don't seriously think it does anything. "Naaaaaaammmme" "Hey, Name. You suck!" "Hey, Name, it's all your fault!"

My school had one for when the opponent takes off his helmet- "Ugly goalie *clap clap clapclapcap*"

Our own goalie is "sexy goalie", obviously.

I like that. That's great.

That's really cute, lol. I like that one a lot.

AYRT

Yeah, I sometimes think it's eyeroll-worthy, especially if the goalie isn't having that bad a game. (And I do get a kick out of it when a crowd starts goalie-chanting and then the game gets tied up - guess you started that too early, friends!) But I don't think it's "too mean!" or whatever the underlying objection to goalie chanting is. Like another anon said, it's literally the cleanest fan taunt ever.

Da

I would really like it for fans to wait for a shot on goal before they start one, though.

Oh man, that's bad. I've never heard goalie chanting without the goalie at least letting in one goal first. I believe it happens, I'm just amazed at how stupid it is. It's not really a good taunt if the guy hasn't even done anything taunt-worthy!

I will attest it did. I mean, dude got pulled the day before but it was the other goalie that let in five. It's not taunt worthy. The game barely STARTED.

I was at a game last season where people started chanting the visiting team's goalie during WARMUPS!!! And they were chanting the wrong name, because the backup goalie was in and there were canting the starter's name. lol

Fans of my team chant the old goalie's name on purpose. We give no fucks about learning your names. That's how much we think of your team.

I 100 percent agree. It's my favorite fan taunt ever. Just saying someone's last name, nothing nasty, nothing gross, nothing inappropriate or sexist, racist, homophobic or that you wouldn't want kids to hear or repeat ... just good clean psyching out the opponent.
