I am a fan of the Pens, is the issue. Like, I get that we're all homers and I'm also a big homer about the team, but like, be cool Sodapop. This is like peak #narrative.

It's not like any of those individual items is untrue, though, and collectively they're a lot of what is making this team fun to watch, IMO. I'd probably leave off, like, Kunitz, but as a whole? Yeah, there a ton of good stories there, and that's part of the fun.

Every 👏 team 👏 could 👏 say 👏 the 👏 same 👏 thing 👏👏👏

They're all charming bands of scrappy misfit millionaires in the end, I suppose.

Cool! that doesn't make them untrue for any team, then?

Maybe there can only be One True Scrappy Team (and it has to be CBJ or a team that has used the hashtag #pesky_______)

I didn't say they couldn't. Does that mean Pens fans shouldn't enjoy things about their team unless those things are ~unique? It's not like of any of us are tallying up all the possible feel-good stories in a column and picking our favorite team based on it. But if we have a team and it has feel-good things about it, why on earth wouldn't we be excited about them?

Re: SCF Predictions Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
That... literally has nothing to do with what people are discussing. Way to miss the point, genius.

I think the problem here is that someone came in saying "it's so funny that people see my scrappy misfit team as villains!", which kind of implies that they are especially scrappy or misfit-y. If they're only a scrappy misfit team as much as any other team, then there's no especially amusing juxtaposition there - try subbing in any other team name (like, for example, the Flyers or CBJ) and you can see how annoying it is. "Oh, it's so funny that Pens fans see my team as villains when really they're scrappy and love each other!" No, they see your team as opponents who they don't like and don't want to win for a variety of reasons. (The decision to call them "villains" is also weird as hell - people don't want the Pens to win for a variety of reasons, but literal villains? Ehhh. Even the people who hate them and call them evil are exaggerating for comic effect. I don't think there's any serious contingent that thinks the Pens shouldn't win because they're downright evil, instead of because they're a divisional rival or their fans are annoying or they won too recently or or or.)

tl;dr Fake exceptionalism and misrepresentation of other people's point of view is annoying, hence the response.

That's fair. The original comment was pretty annoying.

Even the people who hate them and call them evil are exaggerating for comic effect.

I would like to believe you, but some of the Pens haters on meme are really fucking aggressive about it. I don't think they're all doing it for comic effect.

You're right, I didn't word that the best way. "Even the people who call them evil are exaggerating for comic effect" would have been better, without the "hate them" - of course people genuinely hate your team, and I'm sorry that they're nasty about it. But I don't think that's necessarily the same as thinking they're evil.

Some of the Pens fans are pretty fucking aggressive in a much less tongue-in-cheek way, both in their pro-Pens and anti-Other-Teams opinions.

(And as an avowed Pens hater, I both passionately despise the team and every single player on it, some for reasons and some for Reasons, and use exaggerated language for comic effect when talking about the team. I'm a rational person who knows objectively that the Pens are just like every other team in the league. But also slime monsters from the deep whose success is the worst thing to happen to this planet since global warming and the series finale of Battlestar Galactica. Cue lots of bloody pictures of leopard seals eating penguins, because those make my heart feel light.)

Kay, I'll try.

Joe Thornton call a playoff choker for most of his career. Boston ditch him because they felt he was going to be a loser for life that they took a shitty return to trade him.

Sharks chocking against the King who end up winning the cup. Then force to face their enemy on their way to the SCF.

Thinking about it the Sharks has a better story line and player stories.

I mean, it is (minus Kunitz, loool), but it's not beyond mid-grade 'scrap.' Maybe pluck, a lot of good management decisions that look like luck, and a fan who can't seem to see the difference. There's enjoying those storylines and there's buying into that narrative, and you can do the former without doing the latter.

There's a difference between saying "these things make love my team" and "these things make us scrappy misfits so it's funny that people perceive us as the villain rather than the underdog." I mean, sure, but in the end, you're still a team with Crosby and Malkin and Kessel and Letang. I'm also a Pens fan, but it's a little Too Much.

You are reminding me of a MvW discussion about how Sid makes a much better heel than face.

Maybe as fans we should just come to terms with the fact that we are obviously the heel going into this cup final. It's the Sharks first ever final. Pens have three cups.

I believe they were saying they find him more likable (as a character) when he is positioned as the antagonist. It was in the context of one of the 24/7 series.

Re: SCF Predictions Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's wrestling terminology. "Heels" are bad guys and "Faces" are good guys. Faces, because they are usually the prettier wrestlers and heels, because that's a common (albeit old-fashioned) slang term in English for the lowest of the low.

Re: SCF Predictions Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like the Penguins, but I love them as the heel--they're just uninteresting and obnoxious to me as the face. I'd rather evil empire my way to a Cup, though, instead of #lumbus-ing it.

and literally every team has a #narrative. They actually made that point in that dumb showtime series. You might like your narrative the best, but every eliminated team could probably come up with just as many things that they've overcome or reasons they should win.

Re: SCF Predictions Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think anybody saying the Pens should win because of these reasons. I think they're saying it's gratifying that they have won, because of these reasons.

Re: SCF Predictions Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
No, I'm pretty sure I've seen Pens fans saying they think the Pens deserve it the most this year because of x y and z. "It sure would be great if my team won it all because of The Narrative" is basically the same thing as "I enjoy watching my team win because of The Narrative", they're not exactly separate opinions.

Re: SCF Predictions Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you're not even trying to claim that other teams'fans aren't talking about their team "deserving to win". That's like sports fan ABC.

Re: SCF Predictions Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's safe to say they're not claiming that, based on the comments directly upthread.
