Re: Fic discussion - long, long way back to nashville

That Bing statistic is interesting, considering most people I know use it solely for porn searches.

But yeah, ad companies and search engines do a lot of tracking across social media these days, and can sometimes be pretty accurate in gathering data about you. For example, google's ad preferences (if you have them turned on) will make a guess about your age/gender and interests:

http://www.google.com/ads/preferences

So now my head-canon is that google/bing figured out Josi was gay before he did, and it's hilarious.

Google definitely knows tons about you. I have a Nexus phone, which makes you really notice it - google something one day, have random articles show up in your "custom" newsfeed about those topics two days later. Hell, if you have an Android phone, go here - https://www.google.com/maps/timeline . It will cheerfully give you a map of every single place you've been in the past however long you specify. It's a bit freaky. I mitigate browser tracking as much as I can with Ublock Origin and Privacy Badger, but I know that doesn't actually do all that much. Not when Google knows exactly where I am at any given time. (And Apple can do the same thing.)

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Google knew somebody was gay before they did.

I try not to think about how much Apple knows about me because it gives me the heebie jeebies.

Aww, I tried that link and it gave me nothing. :( I even have GPS enabled so I don't know why Google would pretend they don't know (I mean, I did turn tracking off but I didn't think that'd change anything)! Now it won't let me even know what they know!

He was on pornhub in the fic, not on a general search engine. I just tried out his search terms there and it gave me a bunch of straight porn, a thing I almost never search for or watch.

Nonnie, bless you for your commitment to facts and research.

He must have scrolled really, really far down, then. (But seriously, it's the same logic that every "found out teammate did x porn" finding fic uses. Someone else should have found that old porn/sex tape before then, but we just go with it.)

Oh, I get handwaving, it's just there's only so much of it I can do. Teammate's magically the only one to find the video, sure! But not so much when the fic then proceeds to go completely off the rails re: not just the video but everything else until you're sitting there way overthinking how and why anyone is even closeted in a world in which everyone is deeply stupid, careless with their secrets and sex tapes, and goes around having gay orgies at the drop of a hat.

Yeah, I get that it's crack, it just wasn't the kind I find appealing. The contrast between Shea being deeply closeted and everyone else being super fluid re: their sexuality felt a little odd. "Everybody's gay/bi" usually doesn't work for me, and apparently it doesn't work even when it's supposed to be crack.

Obviously it worked for some people, though. I think this is just one of those fics for whom I am not at all the target audience.

Huh. According to that link, Google has only "figured out" one interest for me: parenting. I have no children.

I recently got an add from google targeted at "drivers aged 60+", I am 23 and don't have a license or car.

Using the google account linked to my tablet, which I mostly use for watching true crime documentaries and sports, google apparently believes I'm interested in East Asian music, bicycles, finance and shooter games. Huh. Weird.

I have bicycles and shooter games as well for my google appointed interests.
