What makes you think this is crack? I like crack, but this struck me less as crack and more as an author trying to provide a plot reason for what would otherwise be a long series of PWPs.

da

Because everyone's gay/bi/questioning at the drop of a hat, and the emotional responses of most of the characters are ridiculous? This James Neal is a walking crack dispenser all by himself.

Yeah, that would be the long series of PWP. Is every team orgy fic de facto crack in your mind, for example?

Ehhh, I guess you could make that argument, but I lump those firmly under "kink" and don't think about them as, like, stories in the usual sense. This is trying to have both, though - the kink and a story.

NA - I have a hard time defining anything as crack fic that isn't, like, "they're all chipmunks" or "Gary bettman brings his secret experience as a producer behind MTV's Singled Out to bear in his negotiations with the NHLPA". I'd put this more in the realm of tropey goodness (or tropey badness, YMMV) which fits pretty snugly with "reason to string together a bunch of porn"

I think people use crack two ways. One is "Everyone is a chipmunk," where it's the circumstances that are silly, and the other is where the circumstances might be fairly reasonable, but the emotional realism is more like what you'd see on a sitcom than how you'd see real people to behave. I think this fic is the latter.

The latter also shares a lot of similarities with fic that just has characterization issues. And in this instance, plot issues, too. YMMV, but for crack to work for me, something needs to grounded. This fic was in a weird middle ground that didn't quite land right (as crack or crack treated seriously or just a light fic), IMO.

Fair. Honestly I almost never like that latter kind of crack as I defined it (or sitcoms, for that matter), and basically for that reason - that it's characterization I can't believe in. Some people are obviously into it as a genre, though, so I hesitate to just call it 'bad characterization' and stop.

That fits more with my understanding of what crack is.

I am legitimately disappointed that this Singled Out fic doesn't exist.
