Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 12:17 am (UTC)(link)Eh, I think the saltiness is understandable. Most hockey media is really terrible, and the players have obviously heard the undeserved shitty things that were said about them when they weren't doing well. They remember that stuff, and so do fans. Winning the cup is a big accomplishment and really hard to do, no matter how long they've been "underachieving," and of course it feels good to be able to rub it in the faces of people who said you couldn't do it. But imo that's totally different from this weird attitude people have towards Kessel. It's... fetishization isn't the right word, but idk, it feels like the other side of the same coin of how his haters treated him, in a kind of dehumanizing way. But yeah, people saying that Kessel was playing the best hockey of his life in the playoffs or the Pens gave him the opportunity to be a "complete" player... no.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 12:20 am (UTC)(link)People have also been saying that about Crosby and Letang. I don't think that's condescending. The Conn Smythe vote totals had Kessel just behind Sid. If it wasn't the best hockey of his life, it was certainly close to it.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 12:29 am (UTC)(link)Kessel's scoring this playoffs was consistent with his previous scoring rates and playoff point production. It's not condescending to say he's playing good hockey, it's condescending to suggest he's suddenly good because of the Penguins (people really were saying that Sullivan somehow managed to turn Kessel into a better player) and to act like he's a reclamation project or charity case.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 12:23 am (UTC)(link)I mean, he was playing incredible hockey because he had linemates who weren't, you know, marginal NHLers. I think the Olympics might have been the best hockey of his life, but the fact that HBK became a second line in terms of minutes is because it highlighted all the good things about his skillset. So, it was more of a joy to watch than say, him trying to drag his teammates along on the Leafs. (He did have some good linemates too, but none as good in terms of how fast he is.) So, I don't think it's because the Pens ~redeemed~ him or whatever, but he was playing better than he was on the Leafs because of the team around him.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 12:29 am (UTC)(link)I particularly hate this in how certain fans go really over the top with embracing the hot dog story to the point where it still feels like they're making fun of him. It's not like he gave an interview where he talked about how much he loves hot dogs, that was a probably made up story by an asshole in Toronto that imo was basically fat shaming him after he left. I know when pens fans talk about him "filling the cup with hot dogs" it's a joke, but there's also a level of "look how much we love him and his hot dogs when Toronto hated him!" but like if you really loved him why are you basically perpetuating a stupid story that was designed to make him look like a fat idiot who eats too much and therefore is lazy, or whatever.
This is only tangentially related to what you're talking about but I've been thinking about it for a while. I'm over the hot dogs and don't want to hear about them anymore, basically.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 12:36 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, I hadn't thought about it specifically wrt hot dogs, but yeah, I don't necessarily mind hot dogs being evoked out of spite (since Kessel and his gf seem into it), but some of the things said still come off as fat jokes, only it's "look at our pet fatty!!" instead of "ew a fatty." The joke is that he is fat BUT he is good at hockey, haha! when instead it should be that fatness doesn't matter in this situation and shouldn't be fodder for jokes.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 12:57 am (UTC)(link)AND there's some speculation that his face is puffy because of drugs he has to take to treat the effects of his cancer, which makes me extra sad when people make fun of him. All of the fat shaming the Toronto media did was tied to the idea that he wasn't "trying enough" or some bs (newsflash, people who care more are automatically skinnier) and like no amount of trying is going to change the medication he has to take to deal with the fact that he only has one testicle. (that might be crude but w/e).
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 01:22 am (UTC)(link)I really, really, REALLY fucking hope you left out a word here or were unsuccessfully trying to mock their view, because otherwise fuck off.
And it doesn't matter if fatness is due to medication or not, fat shaming is still shitty. I'm sick of the idea that it is only bad if his appearance is because of medication.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 01:24 am (UTC)(link)I was 100% being sarcastic/mocking their view, sorry if it came off otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 01:16 am (UTC)(link)Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 12:48 am (UTC)(link)Eh, given that Pittsburgh has embraced athletes like Jerome Bettis and Casey Hampton (who weighs 100+ lbs more than Kessel), I think some of it is framed out a record of having athletes who don't necessarily have the 'athlete' body type who are still successful. I think there's more of a push toward the 'athlete' body type in hockey than in, say, baseball, which advanced stats have helped move away from looking like an athlete or football, where heavier is better for getting 4 yards three times. But some of it isn't necessarily as nice or as thoughtful as it could be, so it does smack of 'lol he's fat but he's our fat.' Which is assholeish.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 12:52 am (UTC)(link)Yeah "look at our pet fatty" is exactly it. Some people act like he's practically Homer Simpson or some shit. Like "oh Phi, we'll give you a hot dog if you get a goal!" He's not some bozo wandering around eating hot dogs every day and getting goals by accident, for god's sake.
Without knowing him or his gf personally (obviously) I would guess that they can joke about it because it's so absurd and OTT, so if I was him and started hearing those jokes from the fans of my team I wouldn't feel especially flattered, tbh. And that's not how I would treat a player I supposedly love either. Fat jokes are fat jokes.
