Again, I'm not saying the benching was the right decision (I think it was silly), but Larkin along with Eichel had the lowest possession % (~20%) among NA forwards through two periods. (The Drouin benching was more of a mystery to me, totally unfathomable.)

My only point is that there are stats suggesting that McDavid's line was the best one, so I think it's unfair to answer the question "Are there legitimate reasons to play McDavid more than others or is this just asshole coaching?" with the assumption that the only reason McLellan gave more time to McDavid was because of favoritism of a player on his NHL team, and to say that "numbers" don't back it up.

Cabbie interview of Stamkos. I don't usually like the questions Cabbie asks, but I enjoyed this. Also, found it a bit Stamkos/Hedman shippy.

FWIW I'm not the anon who originally said that, so I don't know if they're talking about in this game or overall.

McDavid's line was definitely the best in this game, but that also seems to be the result of the third period, once the various benchings happened. So for this game specifically - who knows. But I do think they should have played them less in the third if only so they wouldn't have been gassed by the time the goalie was pulled.

As a new player, I haven't had a link to sign up yet. I'd prefer getting at least a few days to do that and figure out how things work...

He's got nearly a decade before he's even considered in his prime

Statistically, for forwards, it'd be more like 4-6 years, no?

Re: Game day thread 19 Sept 2016

In my fantasy daydream world, someone who was five or six this year ends up with some crazy amount of points and shoots up to the top just for the fun of it, but it'll probably be one of the three or four people who have been in the top three or four for the past year or two. Crosby sounds like as good of a bet as any.

People seem to be split down the middle on McDavid. Either they're getting annoyed with him getting so much playing time or they think he's the best player ever and will win every ward and they can't wait until he's the youngest captain ever and will win the Oilers the cup.

...wasn't Gaudreau tied for sixth in scoring? I'd enjoy that fantasy daydream world. We'd get a great Boring Monahan tweet out of it.

Plus it's a huge trophy and he's very small.

Oh yeah, I didn't think you were! Just giving the context for my comments about McDavid's line and their stats. Based on this game, if I had to pick a top line, it would be McDavid's, so even if they were talking overall, not about this game, imo it's strange timing to suggest nothing sets McDavid apart/justifies him getting more ice time. Which doesn't mean I agree with the player usage in terms of ice time, because I agree, they were gassed by the end, and also on the second half of a back-to-back.

Re: Fantasy hockey--Scheduling & New Players

From: (Anonymous)
I'm good with locking it this weekend, personally, but I don't want any new people to feel like they had no time to decide!

Though, to the other anon: you can keep figuring stuff out even after the leagues are locked. As long as you get your sign up link before the lock date, you're good. (Right? Or am I forgetting sth?)

Re: Game day thread 19 Sept 2016

And if you look over the whole tournament, they have all these great forwards, I don't think McDavid deserves as much ice time as he's gotten when other people have been scoring too (ie the power play time he was fed in one of the exhibition games when the second unit was the one getting shots off).

I also think playing any forward almost ten minutes in the third is ridiculous. Shortening the bench makes sense when you're down and your fourth line has the likes of Tanner Glass on it, not multiple 20-goal scorers.

Anyway, my personal complaint this game was more McLellan starting the same goalie on the second half of the back to back. He could have avoided needing to shorten his bench at all!

Starting Murray back-to-back was just silly. Not just because if you have a couple of reasonably good goalies, why make one play back-to-back? but also, the playoffs showed that fatigue is definitely an issue for Murray.

I think a lot of the people expecting McDavid to win the Art Ross/be the best player in the league next season are, explicitly or not, patterning their expectations based on Crosby's second season.

Right? You know fatigue is an issue for goalies back to back, you know Murray has fatigue issues, and you have Gibson and Hellebuyck. Not like it's Pavelec as the other option...

They also put Murray in after he jammed his finger, then pulled him. So dumb.

Commish!Nonny

I've done some digging and calculating. I have discovered that everyone who participated last year was automatically renewed, meaning that, unless they have opted out, they are confirmed as in by Yahoo. This means that anyone who is not checking meme or the e-mail account connected to her or his or their fantasy team from last year is being counted as playing by Yahoo.

This obviously presents some issues for me, because I don't wish to delete the team of anyone who might like to play, but hasn't checked in here or that e-mail account in a while. But I want all of us who are playing to have a fantasy hockey experience that includes members who are actively playing their teams--at least to start out with. I also want to allow for as many new people as possible to join who wish to.

Primarily, what this means is that I need to hear from last year's GMs who have seen their e-mails or messages, whether they are in or out. I promise there are absolutely no hard feelings if someone wishes not to play this time. Opting out is as simple as deleting your team from the league and/or dropping an "I'm out" message on the message board or e-mail to me at DDHLCommish@gmail.com. So far, two people have officially bowed out, and that's totally cool in all the ways.

Conversely, nine GMs have stated they are in, which is also easily done via message board or e-mail (thank you all! I can't wait to face off with you again!).

In addition, we have five brave souls who have e-mailed me saying they want to play! Welcome, new GMs! I anticipate lots of fun (and the good, totally-meaningless-to-real-life kind of angst) in store for you! :D

As the leagues currently stand, that gives us enough to have two fully populated (if on the small side) leagues of 8 this season. (That's not a bad thing, necessarily. Small leagues are superstar leagues. Imagine the WCoH 8 teams--ALL SEASON LONG! It just means less variety in matchups week-to-week and less reason to dig deep to learn about new/undiscovered/sleeper players.)

I am mostly concerned with not cutting out any GMs from last year who might have taken a hiatus from hockey fandom in the off-season for any number of reasons (I myself was only reinvigorated last week, so I entirely know that story--and I'm a bona fide hockey maniac for the bulk of the year, according to anyone who knows me), but who still want to play. I am also concerned with allowing as many new folks as possible to join in, because it really is a lot of fun and adds so much to one's enjoyment in/knowledge of the game and the league.

Those issues have to be balanced with those of the returning GMs who are already enthusiastic about starting the new season and want their draft order as soon as possible so they can start draft research (which really is a good time--I promise! ;) ).

To that end, if you are a former GM on the fence--or you know a former GM who is on the fence and hasn't checked in here or to their fantasy e-mail in a while--please take a look (or prod them to take a look) and make a decision in the next few days. As we discussed in the Scheduling part of this thread, we're talking about locking the leagues this weekend. I need a day or two of certainty that someone is not returning to delete teams and shuffle the leagues, if necessary (our current setup had three leagues, two with 10 teams, one with 8). Shuffling leagues requires responses from people in multiple time zones with their own schedules and lives.

Therefore, if you are a GM from last year who has not yet stated your In or Out preference, please do so by Thursday, Sept. 22nd, at 6pm NA EDT. I will be off work and checking the league site/meme/e-mail that day, so I can make the necessary changes. Please be clear: I WILL DELETE last year's teams whose GMs have not responded (in any of the three provided ways) by that deadline shortly after that time.

If you are a potential new GM considering if you'd like to play, please use the time between now and then to ask any questions (here or via e-mail) about how this all works and make your decision. Adding teams to leagues will be much easier than contracting leagues, so the deadline for adding a new team will be later. Likely 12 midnight (NA EDT), Saturday (heading into Saturday, that is), in preparation for locking the teams and getting the draft order on Saturday, Sept. 24th, at 12 noon.

As always, I'm open to feedback and adjustments. Speak up and let me know!

(And to those who don't care one whit about fantasy hockey, I promise that all this admin stuff will be over soon. The day-to-day of league management goes entirely through the game environment once we're locked in, and it's just fun--or at least easily skippable--draft and player discussion after that. ;) Thank you for your indulgence!)

Re: Fantasy hockey--Scheduling & New Players

From: (Anonymous)
C!N

I totally get the concern! I will be sending league-joining links to new people who have already contacted me by tomorrow, so you can get into the game environment and start to feel your way around. (I apologize if you haven't received a response from me at all yet--as a couple of new GMs who e-mailed me today have not. I work late and take a few hours after work to work on DDHL stuff. Tonight has mostly been filled with responding on meme. I'll do e-mails tomorrow morning--well, my morning, which is early afternoon in my time zone!)

Just be aware that the league you're in may change (see the big post I just made about how the leagues may contract). Also, you may be able to see the teams that the others in the league had last year. Remember that we will be redrafting entirely from scratch, so no one is keeping any of those players. Your fave will be available all over again. ;)

You explained it exactly right, nonnie! Locking the leagues only means no new people can join and no one can delete their own team (only the commissioner can delete a team after locking or after the draft), and we have our league draft order to better help us set our draft ranking lists.

There is still plenty of time for trying out all the bells and whistles of the site and app, setting one's draft rankings lists, and participating in mock drafts (not to mention just general fantasy game and player research).

This is what I was going to say. Despite all the talk of "generational players" every year, the only players who have done what a "generational player" is expected to do--show up and change the game immediately, consistently, and irrevocably--are Sid and Ovi, and even both of them had major stumbles due to injury or coaching/"mental issues" (whatever the fuck that means) in their first several years. But the fact remains, no one aside from Sid and Ovi has dominated the entire league (not just rookies or new players) from the outset in any consistent way from day 1 for more than a year since them over 10 years ago, so the hockey media is desperate for it.

It's a shame Chychrun probably won't make the Coyotes this year, and Strome might not either, because they are already making a pretty good case for themselves as a ship.

I will laugh for days if he doesn't get signed. Because for months all the news was "it's a slam dunk," and "he's the future and everyone knows it so they'll give him what he wants" and "he and Monahan are going to be like Kane and Toews with identical contracts and probably a happy days joint press conference," and now it's like "whoaaaaa he wants all the monies," and "back the truck up" and "it's not close and it's not getting closer"

Yeah, I get why people are sick and tired of the media narrative, but the guy himself has already had a pretty rough start, really. I wouldn't wish more on him.
