Re: Fantasy hockey--Scheduling & New Players

C!N

Thank you for the feedback! While I haven't heard back from everyone, I do think that these dates work well for the mix of players we have. If anyone has a strong objection, I am open to hearing it, but this seems to meet with most people's approval--vocal or silent. :)

I'm so conflicted. I'm really glad he's still getting work and that I can still read the results but I'm really pissed I'm going to have to put money into DK's pocket to get it.

Ngozi's settings are super detailed, but her characters are simple and effective. I don't think Murakami's style fits making a comic very well, even though her portraits are pretty decent. I do think her lite semi-realism sometimes makes them come out a little same-facey, though.

That's why I feel sorry for the Czech Republic. It's one thing to be eliminated in a game you're playing in. It's another to be eliminated after a game you had no control over.

The main thing to compare so far was the ice rinks for me. Ngozi's had much more of an atmosphere.

Eh, I don't think Lombardi/Burke/Holmgren/Poile are a grit and truculence monolith either. I do think they chose players that Tortorella has supposedly worked well with in the past like Dubinsky, but their stated goal with this team was to find good team guys who would do what their coach asked of them. The problem with that is that guys who get that rep, get it because they aren't throwing up huge points — if they were, that's what people would be talking about. I've already seen far too many narratives about how Team USA looked flat, they didn't seem to be trying, etc. instead of the truth: they picked a bunch of slow dudes, and of course, they got outskated.

tl;dr I don't think they left Phil Kessel off because he lacks truculence; I think they left Phil Kessel off because the Toronto media has successfully painted him as locker room cancer.

Yeah, I think it's pretty pointed that the in-house concussion spotters still don't have the power to pull people from games, but that they've added tv watchers who will. Seems 100 percent designed just to pull the cases that are obvious on TV to avoid bad PR.

And, speaking of fun trivia, Suter led all skaters with 28 minutes of ice-time and was the only American to not be scored on.

Good for you, Suter! ~It's probably because your dad played in the Miracle on Ice.~

I just kind of love this article title. "Wild's training camp to be better attended than expected." Throw that shade, Michael Russo.

But my gift was already there since it was showing up on my gifts page. There's 40 now and still nothing else, but I guess we'll see when reveals happen.

I feel like there's less pairing variety than last year.

Puck Daddy, why, why are you embedding podcasts and videos at the end of every single goddamn post now? They crash my RSS reader. Every goddamn one of them. STOP IT.

These links had me caught in a weird spiral of tumblr wank. People have really strong opinions about Check Please, huh? And all this "no one can ever criticise the content creator" lol, isn't criticism part of what being a published artist/author is about?

> isn't criticism part of what being a published artist/author is about?

Absolutely. And, even more, isn't it what fandom is about? I mean, good lord, fanfic is entirely premised on the original work "getting it wrong" (no matter how much we might love said original work). Shocking lack of self-awareness from the fannish space, IMO.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's gotten to the wanky point of no return. There's something to be said for both sides probably, but between "no one can ever criticise the content creator" and criticisms that are more like personal attacks ("this other content creator has way more talent because her drawings aren't ~pedo", really?), it's hard to have a level discussion. Battle lines have been drawn pretty firmly.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
Too true, it's just messy. I'm not surprised a lot of authors/people have abandoned the fandom (from what I can tell from the sidelines lol)

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
I think the comic being indie, free, and kinda, sorta, not really adjacent to hockey RPF makes some people categorize it closer to a casual fanwork than a professional publication. Which is still kinda weird, since tbh, I don't think the criticisms of Check Please! (or YCMAL, fwiw) are harsher than what hobby fandom producers get when they have a large audience that they've disappointed. Probably less in some cases, honestly. Money just makes everything a little more complicated, because lord knows criticism really just means you're begrudging someone else's success.

DA

the funny thing is that back when she didn't get any money from it (5k a month from patreon alone) the updated were more regular and the whole thing seemed more "professional" for it imo. I guess there's added pressure, but also 5k plus two very successful kickstarters

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
NA I agree with almost all the criticisms of Ngozi/omgcp but I wish the ~pedo wankers would fuck off, especially on deke. It's such a fucking stupid thing to complain about when there's so much valid criticism to make.

God, the people I've seen who are like "I wish people gave ME $160k for writing fic", are so - write a damn comic or novel and publish it, then.

She gets 5k a month from Patreon?!

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

To be exact, $5,969.

da

I've heard (from someone railing against Ngozi on my TL no less) that Ngozi was upfront with Patreon subscribers that they could unsubscribe from the Patreon for a few months because there wouldn't be any new updates. They're all choosing to give her the money.
