I've never liked him so this is just more fuel for my fire. Saving puppies doesn't excuse you from head shots.

And stay away from Phil. Dammit.

I imagine Backes buys into the grit narrative because he's not tipping the NHL talent scale.

That's how guys who know they aren't the most skilled conceive of their own value.

Yup.

If your fire needed more fuel, it was his gross anthem comments that made me drop him like a hot potato.

He is tipping the "best American centers not banished to the U24 team" talent scale, though. There's, what, two American centers eligible for the team better than him?

Re: Game day thread 20 September 2016

I would understand it if it was actual fringe (at least for this sort of national team) players like Abdelkader taking offense since they're inherently being insulted, but it's the guys who would have made it anyway even under competent management. This is really silly.

Team North America vs. Team Sweden, 3 p.m.,

Team Europe vs. Team Canada, 8 p.m.,

Apparently they're scratching Larkin, and dropping Eichel and Drouin to the fourth line, to which I can only say: really?

Oh helllllll no. I didn't see what he said please point me and my outrage in the appropriate direction.

Well the game plan is just keep playing McDavid anyway, right?

You mean out of the American centers who didn't end up making the team, right? Just off the top of my head, Johnson (who should have had Backes' spot), Stastny, Bjugstad. Also, Dubinsky, who was scratched.

To be fair, the only guy other than Backes who's been quoted on this and fits that description is Parise. And most of the quotes (including Parise's) look like the responses of people who were pushed to say something about the tweets by reporters and wanted to stop talking about it as quickly as possible.

Except isn't Backes' version of grit usually trying to beat up on kids who are smaller than him and then getting his ass handed to him for it? Surely that's much more humiliating than anything Phil Kessel can say about him.

He's very good at giving himself the moral high horse.

Thanks!

It looks like most of the guys other than Backes were just trying to get out of commenting, lol, but Backes really took it personally. It will be "remembered", really? He sounds so petty.

That was fast.

Honestly I wish they would just admit that it was a poorly constructed and coached team and they'll do better next time. I mock Canada all the time when they have "summits" after they lose. But uh. I think we need a summit.

Maybe they shouldn't have Hank play back to back.

I had to stop reading. Please excuse me while I go watch Marshawn Lynch again to clear this patriotism bullshit taste out of my mouth.

Re: Game day thread 20 September 2016

Marshawn Lynch is amazing. That and Kaepernick's recent comments are real bravery, not hitting a guy in the head with a hockey stick.

Defense has been a mess, too.

Re: Game day thread 20 September 2016

We don't need a summit because our development model is great and we have more and better players than ever. It's literally just the USMNT that's a tire fire.

Re: Game day thread 20 September 2016

From: (Anonymous)
I love that Marshawn got such bullshit from everyone when he played. But he's so thoughtful in his comments. I just appreciate the crap out of him.

Be interesting to see if the Sweden goal changes the approach.
