I want them to get back into the playoffs this year. Mackinnon goes OFF in big high stakes games. He's like a bigger, brawnier version of Kessel.

As amazing as that OT and MacKinnon's goal were, really silly of NA not to pull their goalie and play for the win. Have to think they didn't fully understand the tiebreak scenarios.

They definitely didn't. Mackinnon thought he put them through with that goal.

What a smart guy their coach is, huh.

Watching it I thought they must have known because that last shift was pretty frantic before the OT like they were really pushing to get the regulation win but didn't want to risk the empty netter against. Guess not.

One would think it's his job to be up on that kind of thing.

Ohhhh, this makes me sad a little.

Yikes. That's a shame for them if they get eliminated because of this, which is fairly likely. With such an offensively talented team and Sweden already advanced, they probably would have had a real good chance at the regulation with with the extra attacker.

I'm sad too. He was probably crushed when he found out it's not in their hands anymore. And he really did all he could to end it in regulation, no thanks to McLellan.

Me too, crap. This team certainly has a way of making you care about them.

Even not wanting to risk the empty netter was pretty dumb in this situation, if they really were aware of how the tiebreak worked. They had almost nothing to lose by pulling the goalie, because the difference between an OT win and a regulation loss for them was needing Finland to win versus needing Finland to win in regulation. Whereas the difference between a regulation win and OT win was a clinch versus a likely elimination. I'd guess the coaching staff knew they hadn't advanced (how could they not, the league PR even tweeted clinching scenarios), but didn't fully understand the ramifications of the tiebreak scenario.

Gaudreau didn't know either https://twitter.com/wyshynski/status/778727808839196673

Or I could be given McLellan and co. too much credit, since I've just seen that Gaudreau didn't know either. Wow.

I know this is complicated, but yiiiikes McLellan.

Yeah that's kind of a basic part of his job that he just failed at.

Yeah I guess it still would have been a poor choice if it was on purpose, but it didn't seem generally crazy of a situation to me because of that conservative coaching mentality some have. Or at least it's the kind of bad decisions I expect sometimes.

Just plain not knowing is negligent. A shame if that robs us of a chance to watch this team again.

Yeah. I mean, I think not pulling the goalie on purpose would also have been plain negligent, because it's a bad decision the coach could only make if he didn't really understand what needed to happen for them to advance in all situations. Being conservative is one thing, being conservative when there's nothing to conserve is another. But you're right, plain not knowing all together is a whole different level of stupid.

I'm one of the new players in league A and I've got my draft order set, so I'm ready for them to be locked whenever!

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
So is there any way to search for a player on NHL.com or the team sub-site and get articles about them? Under "news" all I find are videos. I don't want videos! I want everything the Bruins have ever said about Frankie Vatrano! >:(

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Hopefully they're still working on that? In the meantime, if you go to google and trying searching for bruins.nhl.com: vatrano you should get, um, at least 4 results that mention him (that's what I got, anyway, but I didn't actually read any of them). If that doesn't work for you I can c/p those links here.

SA sorry about the errors. Anyway, I just searched the Bruins site for news about Chara and got only 24 results, so things are maybe just taking a while to switch over to the new format.

na

Yeah, not pulling the goalie on purpose IS crazy in this situation because you play conservatively to get to OT to ensure you get at least the loser point, right? But the one loser point here would have been literally worthless to NA, because they would have needed Finland to win in regulation regardless, because of Russia holding the tiebreak.

(The only difference the loser point would have made was guaranteeing Finland's mathematical elimination, because otherwise Finland could have advanced if NA lost in regulation and Finland beat Russian by... 7 goals. Hmm.)

Same. The sad thing is, they're playing really well. It's just that they're up against Canada :(
