There are definitely some prolific, hood writers, but none of them have the personal fandom presence I associate with BNFs.

I don't quite know what you mean by personal fandom presence. thehoyden is a multifandom BNF but she's never been known for having an engaging social media presence. When I think of that kind of BNF, I think of gyzym.

I associate BNFs generally with multiple tropey longfics that may be good or may be only competent and stock standard otherwise. But either way they will get read because people like longfic.

SA Rethinking my comment a little bit. Engaging should be replaced with another word. Notorious maybe? I'm just thinking that svmadelyn was never what I'd call engaging but you can't deny she was a BNF with some kind of personal fandom presence.

Notorious falls more in line with what I was thinking too. Also doing things like organizing exchanges or fandom events.

if you're open to f/f:

let it all unbreak you - http://archiveofourown.org/works/5149568. apparently an actual couple, though to my knowledge the fic series of events is far different from reality (i believe that's intentional, as every other bit of it is very well researched).

no one thinks about eternity - http://archiveofourown.org/works/1116217/chapters/2248263. imo the smut is a little crude, but it's a solid 'female player in the nhl' fic that isn't just alwaysagirl!dude. caveat: it's been a while since i've read it so i can't remember if any hawks players pop up anywhere, but they'd just be cameos anyway.

I think you either have to give the people what they want (and there are different ways to do that), or you have to be really, really fucking good. And I don't do the one because wrong ships and genres and wrong takes on otherwise popular genres, and my prose disappears. I think most BNFs get there by giving the people what they want though.

Also, I should clarify that I wasn't necessarily thinking of BNFs with my original comment. Just "more than a handful of people like your stuff."

I think there's a third option of being very prolific. If you are regularly producing content, even if it's mediocre or not the popular pairings, people will come to appreciate its reliability.

Law enforcement. (Carey's a sheriff, PK's a bounty hunter who's wanted himself in a few counties, they meet up with JT for some local info or something.)

I don't know who on the *actual* Rangers would be a good choice/have history with PK so I can understand why the author went with Tavares, but for some strange and bizarre reason making him a Ranger (even though it's a non-hockey AU) bugged me so I'm venting.

Re: Ask Meme

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I am still sad about PK and Carey getting separated, so on the *business* side is there any chance that Nashville could afford Carey when he goes UFA?

Rinne is signed for one year longer at a high dollar amount, but even ignoring that, I don't see Poile ever dumping those kinds of dollars on a goaltender again, Nashville does have a decent replacement in the pipeline, and a UFA of Price's stature isn't coming to Nashville.

Jake Virtanen just needs to be shipped more in general.

I hate that. If you're going to talk shit about it, I would rather you be less vague and more constructive criticism.

Tumblr's down right now at least on my system, and Yahoo significantly devalued it so I advise everyone with tumblr content you want to save to do it ASAP.

I have not personally tried this, and at least one person I know said wordpress is buggy so YMMV, though.

DA joining the commiserations chorus.

My main beta, reading an early draft: "I'm not sure because I don't know a lot about this player, but maybe characterization problem?"

Me: "Good point!" [revises to fix the problem]

Me: "idk though is it fixed?"

Two additional betas, one who knows a lot about player in question, I checked in with for this specific issue: "yeah it's fixed and BTW awesome job!"

Random commenters after fic posts: "I really didn't like how [player] was [characterization issue that THREE PEOPLE told me was fixed]..."

Me: "WTF? Guess there is no pleasing some people."

Relevant to backstory of a Nick Leddy-centric fic I am working on. I know he played in the Minnesota statewide elite league, but I don't know a lot about how that actually works. Anyone who knows more details please share?

FWIW, sometimes people are just... incorrect, when it comes to something be wrong in a fic vs. an authorial decision. I'm far from a faultless writer, but some of the complaints I've seen have been from people missing things on their end (e.g. "This was frustrating, should've fixed it" ... no? I meant for the audience to be frustrated at that point?).

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-07-20 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I once had someone leave a bitchy comment on a fic because she said that I used the "wrong nickname" for one of the main characters since a veteran had come in with the same one and it had went to him, despite the fact the fic was from the POV from someone who had known the player in question for years and would likely use the old nickname in private/in his head. There really is no pleasing some people, nonnie. I wouldn't worry about it.

Or disagreeing with characterization, which is subjective anyway.

Do you have some more information?? I thought he just played for Eden Prairie all 4 years - despite being drafted by the USHL and having the option to go to NTDP.

Real question: does New York even have Rangers of the law variety? They have national/state forest/park Rangers. But I thought Texas was the only place that had law enforcement rangers outside that. (Hence why Texas Rangers are so iconic.)

Is it this that you're talking about??

The kind you've listed there are law enforcement officers, some of them specifically with New York (as opposed to rangers from the National Park Service), like the New York State Forest Rangers.

But according to the Rangers' website, the name comes from sportswriters calling the players "Tex's Rangers" as the Garden president was assembling the team.
