Re: Ask Meme

On some level it's amusing to me, since their obsession with Canada led them to ice a team that wasn't their best possible option, that they continue to be so obsessed with Canada. On every other level I'm annoyed.

I'm a Kings fan, so I might be biased, but they seem to have a great locker room, and they hang out together all the time and call themselves a family. It may be changing a little bit, what with the trades of real character guys like Mitchell and Williams, but a year or two ago they were all sickeningly cute.

Generally teams who've won cups together are automatically closer I feel, because they've shared such a huge moment in their careers/lives.

Re: Ask Meme

The Bolts seem particularly close, the Drouin drama notwithstanding.

Re: Ask Meme

It seems like the Stars do as well.

Re: Ask Meme

Team sing-a-longs to Shania Twain notwithstanding, is there really exceptional harmony? They get along with no big drama.

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
I feel like you're just going to get people telling you the teams they follow, because unless there's obvious problems, everybody kind of seems to function well.

The players who played for Cooper in the AHL are particularly close on that team. There was a picture of Cooper posing with them at Palat's wedding this summer, and I think he's said before that he thinks of T. Johnson "like an adopted son". That's...pretty close.

I cannot believe my phone decided to break this week of all weeks and I'm back on my ancient Nokia. What did I do to deserve this?

I hope someone puts it on tumblr lol

As a counterpoint, I'm not a CBJ fan, but that locker room has seemed close (in, of course, the bits of social media they choose to release)

That adopted son quote is begging for daddy kink fic.

I feel like for a minute there was a big push in the media to sell the Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin are bffs that will save the team narrative which might confuse people but I'm not sure they get along like a family or anything. They seem to be friendly and genuinely respect and like each other and hang out sometimes but I'm not sure they'll all be best men in the other's wedding or anything. I'm not saying they aren't especially awesome.. I'm just not sure that there's evidence that they are.

8k Nicky/Ovi Hogwarts AU.

Aside from the part of me that wants to stomp my feet about 1) Distinctly not-U.K.-based people going to Hogwarts and 2) Ovi not being in Hufflepuff, as per my own Hat-sorting feelings, I thought this was fun. I'll have to give it a closer read later, since I read on a cell phone, but I especially liked that most of the fic takes place post-Hogwarts with Nicky and Ovi solving a case together as Aurors.

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
Slightly OT, but I remember a player I follow posting a picture of himself and a group of his friends... without a single other current or former teammate. I was honestly baffled for a second, and then felt stupid for internalizing fic's habit of never expanding players' social lives past the team and maybe a few wives. European players in particular are probably extra motivated to find the Little Wherever in their cities when team that doesn't have any other players of their nationality.

Idk, I'm about as much of a Hufflepuff as a person can be and I don't see Ovi as one at all.

That aside, I liked this one. It was definitely fun, and I think the initial Hogwarts setting was just for backstory.

The limited circle for people in fic is imo mostly because non-hockey friends (or SOs, or family members) are mostly not famous, or at least not famous in North America. It's one of the strange quirks of sports rpf, or at least hockey rpf, because in actor rpf there's at least a slightly more diverse cast to populate your fic with.

Lol, I had this experience too honestly at least once. It's funny because part of me is STILL like "but how do they just make friends with people who don't play hockey!" The same way anybody makes friends with people who don't share their profession, self.

Oh, yeah, that's definitely why, I'm just kind of annoyed at myself for not automatically recognizing that as another fic != reality thing.

I mostly put him in Hufflepuff because, well, Ravenclaw's out, I don't feel that he's any more Slytherin than anyone else in the NHL, and he's so big on family and loyalty to country, etc. I can't find it now, but I think there was an interview where he said loyalty (or something analogous) was his most valued trait and one he attributed to himself. He's flashier than your traditional Hufflepuff, but kindness (sponsoring orphanages! everything with Ann!), dedication, hard work, loyalty, unafraid of toil, etc. all apply. Fair play ... eh, but no NHL player is going to pass on that one. I'd also accept Gryffindor for him.

I'm perfectly fine with Nicklas Backstrom in Slytherin, though.

Why is Ravenclaw out?

I was thinking that he hasn't devoted himself to a life of study/doesn't talk about intelligence as his most-valued trait, but he is witty/intelligent/original, etc., so I suppose someone could sell me on Ravenclaw.

So I suppose I am willing to accept any house but Slytherin, lol.

Da He's got a doctorate.

I'm aware of that (or at least of that interview, where his mom said that he was going to get the Russian equivalent of one soon-ish).

I don't really have strong feelings on Hogwarts sortings, but he did go to graduate school and write a thesis, didn't he? Managing that while also being a professional hockey player shows a certain dedication to learning. And I don't think he would say intelligence is his most-valued trait even if it is - loyalty sounds less conceited. So I could be sold on Ravenclaw easily as well.

It's actually more like somewhere between a doctorate and a masters (in the American system at least). It's the equivalent of a PhD in a system where a PhD isn't the highest level graduate degree.
