It depends what you're doing and how much the 10-17 years matter for your AU. I think in some cases, you could totally have fun with new houses, or just say "This person is from this school in this country. Moving on ..." But I don't think it's wrong not to do that. I usually have these arguments in the context of random Sorting discussions.

McLellan says the coaching staff knew the clinching scenarios before the game.

Yeah, the particular school Ovi did his degree at has a lot of famous Russian athletes who did degrees there, although I'd think most of them are probably undergrad -- Kovalchuk, Kharlamov, Morozov, Pavel Bure, Irina Slutskaya, Maria Butyrskaya, Gordeeva and Grinkov... I'd imagine it's at least partially a cultural thing.

I don't believe him. At most, he knew that a regulation win = clinch. But not the other clinching/elimination scenarios.

Well they didn't act like it, so I'm not sure I believe them.

I don't really see why it matters, though. If they did know and still didn't tell the players or make coaching decisions that gave them the best shot forward, it's just as stupid as if they didn't bother finding out about the scenarios beforehand.

Coop's Troops are close among themselves, and the Hedman/Stamkos pre-Coop core is also, but I'm not sure how much the two groups mix or get along with each other. I remember during the Drouin drama a couple of players saying something about they were surprised things had gotten to this point and it was too bad Drouin didn't talk to them and let them know he was *that* upset, and they hoped he was doing okay and I remember thinking that like he hadn't fallen off of the face of the Earth and instead of giving media interviews about how they wished they had talked to him in the past, they could maybe pick up the phone in the present and call him themselves.

I'm surprised there hasn't been about 40 fics popping up over night where Team NA offered Team Finland lots of sex favors if they won the game today.

Right? Either way he didn't do his job, and has still made a couple decisions that helped prevent them from advancing.

it's just as stupid

I'd almost want to say it's stupider, to be honest. You can sort of see how he might have mistaken the clinching scenarios completely -- it's still a terrible mistake, but it's complicated, a lot of fans didn't know h2h was the tiebreaker and not goal diff. It's carelessness but you can see how it would happen. If they did know and still made those decisions -- that's just unfathomably, incomprehensibly stupid.

I think I'm going to have to go with Barrie/Dairy Queen as my OTP

I think it's quite possibly a mix of carelessness and stupidity. He said they went through all the possibilities, but the way he talked about what they knew seemed a little off. Like he was talking mostly about a goal spread they had to stay within, which didn't actually matter in any scenario but a regulation loss, and even then not that much. Maybe he was referring to that particular path and didn't say it perfectly, or otoh maybe they were looking at the wrong things altogether/had the wrong end of the stick.

Not that I'm imputing this motivation to him, but for me personally, the fact that tiebreakers are convoluted and differ across various tournaments and leagues is the number one reason I would hesitate to get aggressive in a situation like this. I wouldn't want to find out after losing sort-of-on-purpose that actually I misinterpreted some unfamiliar rule wrong and surprise, my team goes home when they didn't have to.

I know Stamkos was distracted by his own drama at the time, but I especially felt like he kind of missed the boat on that one. We don't know the whole story obviously, but as the captain (and past high draft pick with a lot of expectations) I kind of felt like he needed to step it up. Instead he kind of expressed his disappointment in the press while saying he's going to be a "stud" one day. Not super helpful!

I think you're right, that actually seems most likely. I just hope he, like, realizes what the actual error was at some point? He doesn't sound like he does, but then again, I wouldn't fess up to the press about that either.

I totally agree with you on that last bit from a fan point of view, because I definitely thought I'd worked out all the scenarios, then second guessed myself and had to count out each scenario's goal diff. But for a staff full of coaches it's insupportable. They also basically did what you said, except they played for OT sort-of-on-purpose, misinterpreted the unfamiliar rule wrong and surprise, they're probably going home when they didn't have to. But I do get that it's different, because that sort of aggressiveness feels risky -- and not only is the culture generally risk-averse, I feel like normal league play definitely rewards trying for the loser point over going aggressively for the win. In this case, it was just a total miscalculation of what the risk was, in a situation where what's normally the "risky" play becomes actually probably the safest one.

(Sorry, I'm totally one of the nerds who loves working out every single scenario for playoff clinches/eliminations without "looking at the answers" because I think it's fun.)

I agree, especially in Drouin's case, because he's not a part of either of the two main groups we know about, with him kind of floating out there by himself not having gone through the AHL first.

A bit of a tangent, but does Drouin have any friends on the Lightning or the Crunch? Given all the weirdness, I'm wondering if he had time to make any.

I really wanted Russia and NA to come out of this group, so I'm sad because I could have had it all but, McLelllan! *shakes fist*

I know someone said elsewhere that everyone would say the team's they are a fan of, so this comment may be in that vein, but I can say that the Caps' room last year was way tighter and more functional than it had been in prior seasons.

It had been factional in the past, and while there are still tight groups that are in sub-sets (the Russians, the Swedes, the Hershey crew, the roomies and other assorted young knuckleheads, the new dads--oh, wait, that's practically everyone), there is more cross-pollination between groups than had been present before (Kuzya and Orpik being tight, for example).

Also, for a team whose personnel didn't change that much, there are some big personalities missing this season--Chimera, Latta, Laich (for the whole year). Their absence in the room is going to be way more noticeable than their absence on the ice. I will be most interested to see who Lars Eller becomes buds with.

Tewam North America/Canada would have been fun.

I'm curious if it'll be Europe or Sweden against Canada in the final.

C!N

Final Warning!

The deadline for returning GMs to let me know they are renewing their teams is in a little less than 20 minutes. I will be deleting any teams whose GMs have not responded by that time.

Returning GMs who have contacted me and new GMs, I will be sending invites to switch leagues to a few folks (all League C folks, be on the lookout. I'm afraid League C is biting the dust--unless anyone else pipes up about wanting to use that league as a nascent Keeper league, but aside from the two initial posts expressing interest, I have not seen anyone else chime in). I need to delete the non-renewing teams first and do a head count in the leagues.

Folks who've been on the fence about signing up, you have until Friday night (midnight Saturday, 9/24, NA EDT) to decide. I think we absolutely need one more team to make both our new leagues even, but can accept several more. Take the plunge!

I don't know which specific players you guys are referring to, but the players I've seen who have "outside friends" are usually guys they played with at a young age or people they went to school with. Or friends of friends they played with.

Excluding guys who are really active with a group or charity (like the November Project or something) I can't think of any players who have friends where it seems like they met them through non-hockey channels.

The amazing thing is that there are multiple poor decisions you can point to where he fucked up.

Anyway, as someone who dislikes the Oilers, he's your problem now.

I wish there had at least been NA/Canada (and NA/USA just for lols) exhibitions. It's seems like such a shame and a waste we never got to see those teams face off, meanwhile we had three USA/Canada match ups, which were pretty boring except the first one only because it was a total shit show. And maybe seeing Patrick Kane cry at the end.

Teams that are successful have good locker rooms.

Teams that are not getting results have bad locker rooms.

At least that's what parts of hockey media keep telling me!
