Marchand re-signs at 8 x $6.125 mil.

And thus the UFA Marchand to Pittsburgh pipe dream dies as quickly as it was born.

Leaving behind only one dream: Crosby to Boston.

I kid, I kid. Seriously, good for Marchand and good for the Bruins. People have noted that he could have gotten significantly more on the open market, but he wanted to stay a Bruin.

Going to hijack here and vent at the end of the post where less people will see it. A really annoying thing about this fandom is how people use other teams as props, and I realize it's not a team-specific thing, everyone does it.

But one of the names attached to this Jultz fic left a comment that annoyed me when I saw it, on a Flyers!Geno AU, something about how they didn't like how Giroux was mentioned in the fic because obviously Geno should have taken his place.

The author replied back saying they love the Flyers! And Giroux! But come on, because in a Flyers!Geno fic the only irl Flyer ever mentioned by name was Giroux, and sometimes incorrectly, giving off an impression that he was there just to be name-dropped as a token. For instance, Giroux was not captain of the Flyers in 2010, nor was he that big of a cheese at the time. Why bring him up there?

Not a huge deal, but the juxtaposition of those two attitudes which are both slightly annoying on their own rankled me enough that I feel like posting about it.

Yeah, having Bergeron and Marchand for a combined $13 mil is really amazing. Anyone who thought there was a realistic chance of Marchand leaving was fooling themselves.

People think Stamkos re-signing and the Subban/Weber trade were big deals, I can't even imagine the collective minds that would be lost for days on end over Crosby to Boston.

There are definitely people who "love" teams/players without actually knowing anything about them or caring enough to do any research to make sure they write them well. I probably know more about the 4th liners on my team than I do my favorite star from a different one ... But if I was going to write, say, PK Subban (a player not-on-my-team whom I enjoy), I'd research him, and if the Habs or the Preds were important to the story, I'd look for info on them/appeal to meme for resources, do my very best, etc.

But I also write for a rare team and have seen my faves destroyed in fic, and I wouldn't want to do that to other people!

I'd love for it to happen just for the drama of it all. It's never going to, but it's funny to think about.

Those are both extremely annoying on their own, so I applaud your restraint in just commenting about it here.

A lot of times people who do follow the team have a depth of knowledge and can tell you about it or link you to stuff too! It just fleshes everything out more.

The Triple Gold Club having become passé, Sidney Crosby now sets his sights on the EGOT, which he has achieved 1/4 of by winning an Emmy.

For sure! Hell, hockey rpf fans will write you primers on the spot. It's hard to write new teams, but other fans will help you out.

I think you guys overestimate the access the average fan has to fans of other teams. There's not really a multi-team space outside of deke or reddit, and most RPF fans don't hang out in either place. Most people aren't going to be comfortable just messaging a random they find on Tumblr, either. Even primers (such as they are these days) are basically impossible to find if you don't already know who on Tumblr might be writing/reblogging them.

DA - I don't know much about the flyers, but wouldn't it have been more Carter or Richards that Geno replaced. If they had a viable alternative center wouldn't it make sense for Carter to be traded earlier?

Reddit has the 30 Teams in 30 Days, though. SBNation also sometimes has primers.

It would make an interesting switch for fic where instead of someone being traded *from* Boston you have someone traded to Boston.

I specifically talked about using meme as a resource? And, honestly, when I've seen factual errors regarding my faves, they were things that could have been discovered by checking Wikipedia and/or looking at a single recent photo. It's hard to write new teams, and sometimes to write lesser-known players on teams you do follow, but you can't tell me someone put in even a minimal effort and still got the year of captaincy wrong.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-26 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
na

I get that, but a lot of information you can find just by checking Wikipedia or doing a simple google search? That was how I first started information and primers about my team, not through anyone I knew on tumblr. And -- the original complaint was about a Flyers!Geno AU -- surely if you're going to write that AU, at least look up who was on the roster those years?

Idk I don't necessarily blame people for not doing that research when they're writing fic that's mostly about indulging their feelings in their own team/their own favs, but I don't blame others for getting annoyed at seeing their favs used as "tools" either.

Neither of those usually covers the types of information that people often complain about people getting wrong about specific players in fic.

That would be nice! I could use a few fics where someone is traded to Boston and finds their forever home there. It seems like a warm, friendly environment from what I've seen. Though if it was Crosby it'd probably have to be a crack fic. There's no way for the logic to work beyond a handwave.

Yes, I know? My point was most people aren't on deke and in fact actively avoid it if they know about it, in my experience. "Just ask deke" is not a viable solution for most people.

Re: Fic Discussion - Jultz

(Anonymous) 2016-09-26 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
There is, of course, the option of doing your own research. I mean, I write for teams that are A) not my main team and B) not super fandom popular, and still have yet to ping someone's pedantry alarm.

Re: Fic Discussion - Jultz

(Anonymous) 2016-09-26 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've checked the 30-in-30 writeups a couple of times, and they never told me the kind of thing I wanted to know. I have better luck reading the comments to old SB Nation year-end write-ups if I want to get a sense of the feeling of a team in a given year.

I am confused at who you are annoyed with, the commenter who said that Geno would have replaced Giroux or the author who replied that they love Giroux? I can't quite parse your comment. It sounds like you're saying that Giroux was not that important in 2010, but I'm not sure if you're chastising the commenter for saying something (because Geno would have replaced someone more important) or the author who chose to include him as a character (because the author should have included other more important 2010!Flyers into the background of her Geno fic).

People not wanting to use a resource is not the same as that resource not being available to them.
