Re: Hockey Media - nationally televised NHL games next year (in the US)

Lmao @ "groups self-referencing pejoratives aimed at them" like making fun of white people is the same as pejoratives aimed at other racial groups. They aren't self-referencing pejoratives aimed at them because that would actually require self-awareness. They're hopping on the train because they think it's ~funny and that they're ~cool, non-mayo white people when they're just as mayo as any other clueless white person.

On which platforms?

Re: Hockey Media - nationally televised NHL games next year (in the US)

From: (Anonymous)
Ones that black and brown people use. Including the internet.

If Hawks fans on twitter could stop going "lol sucks to suck,"

Wait, which team with 21 games didn't get out of the first round last year? HMM. But obviously things like playoff results has very little to do with this - see Buffalo and Boston, too. And then Pens have fewer nationally broadcast games this year than last year, despite having won the Cup this season vs going out in a miserable five games in the 2015 playoffs.

My only consolation is that I expect the Hawks to be mediocre at best next year, and they'll have lots of opportunities to suck on national television.

Someone else made a good point about white people not being in a position to ~reclaim insults used against them, but "self-referencing pejoratives aimed at them" would be white people calling themselves "mayo," not Flyers fans calling Crosby "mayo."

Yes. Yes it is. And somehow two decent tasting foods combine to make something akin to vomit.

da

I mean, it's not "cultural appropriation" in the sense that the insult "mayo" is a culturally valuable thing, but black Americans have been talking about white people (and let's be real also non-black POC, of which I am one) using language that originates from and has a specific meaning in their communities -- in ways that misconstrue it, depoliticize it, erase Blackness from it, are just flat out unfair (because it's stigmatized when black people use it and ~hip when others do) -- for a long, long time. Also white people who make fun of whiteness but exclude themselves from that mockery are at best laughably un-self-aware.

I mean, vomit itself is also often made from a combination of originally decent-tasting foods...

lmao, why would we stop doing that when you trash us for existing all the time?

NA

Is this a thing people still sort of blame on Tom Hicks? I remember Dallas had really good revenue in their heyday late 90s/early 00s (not sure about ratings though). Sort of suggests the kind of popularity that would be worth putting on primetime games since the team is good again.

I see reading comprehension isn't your strong suit.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Not a fandom vent precisely, but inspired by a bunch of sports twitterati mocking an athlete (who I don't even like!) for blocking them.

He already has to deal with the media, maybe he simply prefers not to come across you trashing him while he's on his personal twitter account. Just a thought!

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I'll agree with you here. I'm sympathetic to famous people who block especially when there's a bunch of people who include the handle on personal discussion that the player doesn't need to be included on.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

For the two other people on meme who give a damn about Pittsburgh media drama, Jason Mackey is now with the Post-Gazette covering hockey again, after having left the Trib to go work for DK's site. I have to wonder what the story was there.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
My sense is that he left the Trib because it's a horrifying cesspool. But wasn't on the Pens beat on DK's site and wanted to get back to it.

But I don't know for sure.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
I didn't know that about the Trib. On one hand there's Rossi, but on the other hand there's Bombulie, whom I have no issues with, and West, whom I really like. Or do you mean upper management?

Re: Hockey Media - nationally televised NHL games next year (in the US)

From: (Anonymous)
A little? But Dallas has always been a winners town so, uh, the general pop moves onto other sports if THE TEAM IS SEVERELY MEDIOCRE.

Re: Hockey Media - nationally televised NHL games next year (in the US)

From: (Anonymous)
Okay, seriously speaking as a Dallas nonny, this is more games than we got last year.

ayrt

My sense (mainly via DK and a piece that Yohe wrote once) is that it's upper management. They had a huge exodus this year (?? Maybe last hear) and the sense I've always gotten is that the reporters are fine (good even. I don't hate Rossi. He's an inflammatory pain in the ass sometimes (a lot) but at least he's a decent writer.) but the management is crap.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
I will never, ever understand your opinion (and I'm reasonably sure it's just you, specifically on meme) that Rossi is a decent writer. It's baffling. You say it every time he comes up and every time I am looking for signs of sarcasm.

People are majorly overestimating Matthews' power as an #icon.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

Whenever meme is feeling especially Rossi-wanky I think about how Wysh one time compared Rossi to Joe Haggerty and basically said love them or hate them those two absolutely "know where the bodies are buried" with regards to the teams that they cover. I always wonder if Haggs is as despised as Rossi and I just don't know it because I'm not a Bruins nonnie and the only thing I know about Haggs is he named his dog Looch.

Also I wish I could remember what ep of MvsW that was because Wysh did his "Rossi impression" and it was hilarious.
