Things You Wouldn't Say Unanon

From: (Anonymous)
It's been awhile.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Say Unanon

From: (Anonymous)
People are majorly overestimating Matthews' power as an #icon.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Say Unanon

From: (Anonymous)
This election has been making me think a lot about what other people's politics mean to me, and I wonder if the flip side of not caring too much if players are Trump supporters is being not all that impressed by players being """good""". Especially with the kind of fandom adulation that brings... like, I feel like I am becoming more and more disenchanted with Ben Scrivens and everyone's worship of him, after hearing him talk so forcefully over queer people re: the NHL's response to Andrew Shaw's use of a slur. Which, no one is perfect, but added to a few years ago when he whitesplained blackface to defend Raffi Torres doing it (he read the wikipedia article! it's a "gargantuan leap" to connect the two!!)... idk. It makes me wonder why I allowed myself to think SO highly of him (and others) and why I allowed him being "good" to mean so much to me, when in other contexts, I've personally held people to higher standards than that and judged them when they didn't meet them (like, think of how fandom interacts with each other, think of tumblr). I'm a hockey fan, of course I understand that having hockey players stand up for important issues IS meaningful!! but... it just unsettles me that I thought so highly of a white man for what, in different circles, is basically no more than some of what's part of being a decent human being... just because he's a marginal NHL player? I feel like I can't talk about this in namespace without people feeling like I'm attacking or subtweeting them, and that's not my intention at all -- it's just something that has more and more been making me reflect on myself in a kind of uncomfortable way, and I sort of wonder if anyone else feels them same :/

Re: Things You Wouldn't Say Unanon

From: (Anonymous)
I mean, that's fair, but as you said, no one's perfect, we're all always learning, and compared to the vast majority of his peers, he's aces and seems to be trying to be better still. That's all I can ask of any celebrity I'm going to throw my support and/or money at.

Better than let's say Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Toews vaguely saying an LGBTQ athlete would absolutely be welcome in the League, getting fandom praise undeservedly heaped on them for their minimal effort, and then dismissing Andrew Shaw's slur fuckery 2 years later.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Say Unanon

From: (Anonymous)
There's this joke I saw on tumblr that captures my feelings on this pretty well: "A male feminist walked into a bar...because it was set so damn low."

I think to a certain extent I just accept that the average NHL player is not someone I would consider a good person. As a group, my expectations for them are so much lower that my standards have also fallen in this one area, to the extent that I'm pleasantly surprised even when someone does what would be the bare minimum (or less) in other circumstances. So he's lauded basically because he's better than his peers, even if he's really nothing special in any other context.

(mainly because I don't know where to put this, and I really wouldn't admit it unanon)

Stromecest should be called Stromance. Or at least a subdivision for Stromance.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Say Unanon

From: (Anonymous)
As much as I love fic with Bad Man Ryan Strome (and boy howdy, do I), I also want more Stromance fic that's also not shy about how messed up that would be.

Yeah, I was gonna say, there generally isn't a whole lot of romance in Stromecest.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Say Unanon

From: (Anonymous)
Even though I know it's inevitable and like his #destiny or whatever I get this weird anxious feeling (on his behalf?) every time I remember that McDavid is very very likely to be named the captain of the Oilers pretty soon. It's so irrational, and I have no idea why. I don't even like him that much, and I definitely don't care about the Oilers, and like I said it seems painfully inevitable so there's no point for little ole me to worry about it, but for some reason I do. Were there Crosby stans who felt this way when he was a rookie? Or am I the only one who projects too hard? I DON'T EVEN LIKE HIM THAT MUCH!

Re: Things You Wouldn't Say Unanon

From: (Anonymous)
I ship Marchand/Bergeron, but I don't find Bergeron particularly attractive. I don't think he's unattractive, he's just ordinary-looking. WNAU because Patrice the Perfect and Beautiful is basically a meme in Bruins fandom - all of it, not just the RPF part.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Say Unanon

What do you think of Marchand then?

I thought Gaudreau was MENA-descended for a good long while, and now that I'm pretty sure he's not I no longer care about him at all. WAU because of the obvious potential for racewank, but honestly it was more like rooting a little bit for a random guy on a team you don't care about because he's one of like three guys from your hometown out there, then dropping it entirely when you find out he's actually from somewhere else.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Say Unanon

From: (Anonymous)
That's just really random.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Say Unanon

From: (Anonymous)
*tilts head* Not judging, but help me understand. Do you follow MENA-descended NHL players and thought Gaudreau was one of them, or you found Gaudreau interesting b/c you thought he was MENA-descended? (ngl, I started following hockey back in the day b/c Paul Kariya is HAPA (and hot), so I understand that feeling of solidarity)

Do people like LadyJanelly's work/what do they like about it? I could never get into anything she wrote for some reason and I don't know why. Something about her stories just bother me.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Say Unanon

From: (Anonymous)
I liked her homelessness verse. From the very beginning it was kind of weird (Tyler just dumps a dog on a stranger?), but it managed to do homeless fic without dipping into pointless melodrama too much. I liked the side characters best of all - she did a good job drawing them into realistic people without dwelling on them too long. Having said that, her stuff all reads better to me as origfic.

You're not alone. I remember her from about ten years ago from Eminem fandom which was tiny and always desperate for fic - she was a competent writer yet something always rubbed me the wrong way. *shrugs*

Re: Things You Wouldn't Say Unanon

From: (Anonymous)
I read the homeless fic on a recommendation from meme, and have reread it once, which is a thing I usually only do for rare pairs, but I don't follow her tumblr and haven't started reading the apocafic or whatever that she's posting.

I think most of what I like is that her OCs and ensemble characters seemed really sensibly human and imperfect, which was just enough of a foil for Tyler and Jamie's coping methods - a narrower gap that the usual Perfect Voice of Reason vs impossibly stupid miscommunication/pining.

My memory of her prose is that it was perfectly adequate, competently descriptive, and didn't get in the way of the story, which is by far what I prefer for a work of that length.

The very first installment of the omgcp spinoff has been up for like two hours and I'm already sick of hearing about it.

Isn't it by a completely different person? I don't think it's a spinoff.

As already said I don't think its a spinoff, it is the same artist who did that series of hockey portraits the style of which I preferred to this new comic. I am confused how other people are actually reading it though. The panels show up way too small for me to read the text on my monitor.
