People I know who were supporting Jeb or Rubio are also planning not to vote, or just vote in Senate/House races.

That was my first thought too. It's weirdly good. What was he even doing?

This is a Trump-like distortion of the truth, I hope you know.

Someone said most American NHLers would vote Trump. Then there absolutely was an anon citing polls to argue "young white men don't like Trump ergo most American NHLers will not vote Trump".

I would say those are both pretty big jumps in logic.

I don't think I've ever appreciated authors who write the first fic for a ship or character enough. This is a lot harder than I thought. /o\

Fistbump of solidarity from someone who's been there, nonny. But on the bright side, it's kind of awesome if your fic does manage to stir up some interest in the pairing!

I wish that real-life Ryan Suter more closely resembled the romanticized Ryan Suter that lives in my brain.

I feel like traditional conservatives who really think and feel deeply about their politics might ~vote their conscience or not turn out for Trump. But I think most people who have typically voted Republican in the past will vote for Trump, just because. And then there are those conservatives who were always more on the bigotry side of things anyway. Ryan Whitney, for example, was a dick about BLM early last year, over something like their protests blocking traffic iirc.

There absolutely was not. People were citing polls, that most of them probably weren't registered to vote, and that not all conservatives were voting for Trump, etc. as reasons people didn't have to assume NHL equals Trump voter. No one was saying they knew who anyone was voting. The only thing Trump-like here is your extremist interpretation. But if it makes you happier to assume most NHLers are Trump voters, you do you, nonny.

Something in the Trump thread reminded me - the Oilers didn't renew Tyler Dellow's contract and I wonder if it's partially because he was a super-dick on his personal twitter about #BellLetsTalk day. He's really good at hockey analytics but has always seemed to be a dick in general and I wonder if it turned out he was better suited for writing a super critical blog as opposed to actually doing analytics in a professional environment.

Didn't he delete because the Oilers told him to? It wouldn't surprise me.

Between this and the Canadiens guy, bloggers be getting unpaid. I think some teams brought on analytics folk for faddish reasons to appease their critics and had no interest in really using them as a resource.

And then there are teams like Carolina, who make extensive use.

Marc Dumont said he thought as much about the Habs in his AMA with the Habs subreddit -- before Matt Pfeffer got fired.

Along those lines, I feel like with Dellow I remember reading one of the main proponents of bringing him in at the time was Dallas Eakins, who is no longer with the Oilers.

Re: Hockey Media - KHL expansion

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/russia-conquering-great-britain-as-khl-expands-to-london-144902424.html

The KHL is expanding to London! (This is already over a week old, sorry for the late news.)

I have to say I'm never sure if I welcome or dislike the KHL expansion politics. On one hand I think it's exciting if there's a strong Eurasian league, but otoh it's so clearly Russia based (with good reason), that I don't think it can ever actually be competitive in all markets they're aiming for? Like maybe Russia and Scandinavia have a similar attitude to hockey in terms of, you know, liking it, but other countries? Like, it's a lot less popular in A LOT of Europe, England/UK included.

My country doesn't have a KHL team yet, but there's rumours from time to time and I just cannot see that working out? Otoh maybe a big league like that would drum up the needed enthusiasm, but I'm not too sure where that would be coming from. I guess it'll be interesting to see how the new Beijing team will fare...

(Didn't feel like making a new thread because I have no idea whether anyone even cares about the KHL/International hockey, lol.)

Thanks for sharing, nonny. I hadn't seen this.

I don't think hockey is ever going to really get popular in the UK. There are fans, definitely, and the fans that love it really love it, but it's seen as such a niche American sport that I doubt this is going to make much difference. I think it'll fold pretty quick unless they can convince fanbases from elsewhere in the country to support it.

You can also add the Oshie family to Trump supporters.

ayrt

Yeah, I keep thinking "how are they gonna fill all these seats regularly?". I don't know how it's supposed to make enough money to be self-sustainable, but then again I really don't know enough about the allocation of money in the KHL. I should read up on that.

And for the UK specifically I'm really not sure if London is the best city. It hasn't really proven to be a great hockey market, and with the fans elsewhere I'm not too confident, they'd enjoy cheering for London. (Disclaimer that this perception is influenced by one of my English hockey friends who likes to tell me how everyone not from London/South England hates London, and that's not where the general fanbase is...)

I mostly just really do not give a fuck about the alleged political leanings of people I don't know if they aren't spewing predjudice across social media. I'm way too busy to care about Instagram likes.

Re: Gossip and off-ice lives

(Anonymous) 2016-07-24 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
For Domi, it was just the Instagram like, but for most of the other people mentioned, their political leanings (not alleged) have become known because they have publicly expressed or supported bigoted sentiments. If we were just to list hockey players who've liked or followed Trump et al on social media, it would be a much longer list.
