Re: Hockey Media - KHL expansion
From: (Anonymous)Yeah, I keep thinking "how are they gonna fill all these seats regularly?". I don't know how it's supposed to make enough money to be self-sustainable, but then again I really don't know enough about the allocation of money in the KHL. I should read up on that.
And for the UK specifically I'm really not sure if London is the best city. It hasn't really proven to be a great hockey market, and with the fans elsewhere I'm not too confident, they'd enjoy cheering for London. (Disclaimer that this perception is influenced by one of my English hockey friends who likes to tell me how everyone not from London/South England hates London, and that's not where the general fanbase is...)
Re: Hockey Media - KHL expansion
From: (Anonymous)It'll be a logistical nightmare scaling up from a maximum of a few hours coach ride to regularly flying out to Eastern Conference games - I can't even think how away game travel / transport costs would work (Vladivostok-Khabarovsk-Beijing must play a lot of back-to-backs, I guess).
Re: Hockey Media - KHL expansion
From: (Anonymous)And even if they say that the standard will be higher in the KHL, how do they mean to pay for those contracts of better players? And then the transport logistics like you mentioned... With London being this far west even "only" flying to Helsinki or Moscow would already be a lot more hassle than most European clubs are used to. And I guess they don't really count on establishing a continent wide tv audience? Even in the NHL people are grumbling about timezones and that's only three! The KHL has 12 now!
I don't know. I don't want to be too pessimistic but I keep thinking "well, how's it gonna work then" about a million aspects.
Re: Hockey Media - KHL expansion
From: (Anonymous)The problem then is building that supporter base from a standing start, which... I don't know? Looking at other teams that've been brought into the KHL they seem to be clubs that already existed, which might be an easier way to go - if one of the EIHL clubs could be be persuaded to switch to a much bigger pond? Still wouldn't solve the skill disparity between the leagues though, especially if the KHL keep to the same rules on the numbers of a team's native/non-native players.
Re: Hockey Media - KHL expansion
From: (Anonymous)And they can't make that much money from tv. These are the figures I got from googling real quick.
The Kontinental Hockey League has given a further boost to its teams and their fans with a payment of 114m rubles (approximately $1,827,200) to be shared among all member clubs. (...)
Of the total, 40% is to be shared equally among the KHL member clubs and a further 30% is allocated in direct proportion to demand among the TV audience. The remaining 30% is performance-related (...).
This means that last season’s champion, SKA, receives 15.2m rubles (approx. $244,600) and regular season winner CSKA is handed a total of 10.6m ($170,500). Beaten Gagarin Cup finalist Ak Bars has the consolation of 8,7m ($140,000) and last season’s surprise Eastern Conference finalist, Sibir, has a windfall of 4.2 m ($67,500).

I just have the feeling that if the clubs don't have some big payer(s) backing them and willing to burn money for years, they'll be bankrupt sooner rather than later. It just makes me sad. :(

From: (Anonymous)Re: Hockey Media - KHL expansion
From: (Anonymous)I'm most familiar with how Euroleague Women's works, but there most teams are owned and sponsored by companies running the gamut from investment banks to mining and energy, plus the occasional hobbyist billionaire. The cost of owning a sports team is a drop in the bucket for them, so turning a profit is a nonissue. The entire team is like a big ad campaign/outreach program; the money's expected to be a sunk cost.
But I don't know if that's how it works for the majority of KHL teams, especially outside of Russia. The number of clubs that fold for financial reasons points to only a few. It's certainly not a popular model in North America or western Europe.
Re: Hockey Media - KHL expansion
From: (Anonymous)I wanted to add that corporate ownership/bankrolling is also common for Chinese sports clubs. A quick google didn't turn up any details on who or what owns the new KHL Beijing team, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's how they're funded.
