Well, if it makes you feel any better, your recipient probably didn't want a Kane hater writing their gift just as you don't want to write it.

Just grit your teeth, ignore it, and try to focus solely on the exchange request.

Re: Writing Thread

You can always ask anon on their tumblr.

Re: Writing Thread

From: (Anonymous)
If they have one, they don't link to it anywhere.

Re: Writing Thread

Who wrote it again?

Oh, d'oh, I really thought it was addandsubtract. Probably should have also looked at their recent fics when I double-checked that they didn't link anywhere...

Yeah, actual author gdgdbaby has a couple places to contact them on their AO3 profile.

obviously cw for all links given the topic.

about 90% of kids are molested by family or at least people they know (first link has a table at the bottom breaking down that 90%. second has infographics for a quick overview and a bunch of "read more" links that include the source of the statistics.)

"Kane hater"? Are you serious with this? Him and the events of last summer are still difficult for a lot of people.

Re: Hockey Media

From: (Anonymous)
I wanted to tear up a little at that, and then at him using his own experience to be a Big Brother in Nashville to a kid who'd just lost *his* dad who Ward apparently still keeps in contact with.

+1

This pretty much sums up how I feel after the last year or so in this fandom.

Thanks for sharing with the class, because it made my day a little brighter too.

(I'm a sucker for hockey dudes with cats most of the time, and Bollig gets an extra point because this one was a shelter adoption.)

I didn't even think about Bozak! Now I'm sad too. I wonder what happened.

Re: Hockey Media

From: (Anonymous)
It's possible it just wasn't convenient for him to come or he had other plans? It's not like all the Leafs just stay in Toronto over the off-season. Phaneuf did come and that's cool, but I don't think it merits being sad or needing to ask questions about anyone else's absence.

PK flew in from Nashville! Things like this is what my RPF fandom is made of. Phil and Bozie were best friends!!! Currently my favorite headcanon is that Lamouriello forbade Leafs players to go, or that the break-up was that bad. Yes there's probably a mundane explanation but not thinking about the ~drama possibilities isn't fun.

PK is from Toronto and has family there, he didn't go to a random city just for the sake of spending time with Phil Kessel. Yeah, having stuff like this for RPF fodder is great! (but also not what the convo in this thread seemed to be about?) I'm just saying there's no need to be sad IRL that Bozak wasn't there when there wasn't really an expectation that he would or should be.

Re: Fic Discussion - Heaven Help a Fool Who Falls in Love

From: (Anonymous)
That really wasn't well done and the cringe scene at the end was even more cringe than i expected.

Re: Hockey Media

From: (Anonymous)
Doesn't Bozak have a baby, and is from Alberta? Might just not have been convenient.

Re: Hockey Media

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, like, it's not something that demands an explanation. People have lives, and especially with a family and a baby, summer plans are more likely to be made in advance of summer and less likely to change just so you can travel somewhere for one day to go to a party and chug champagne out of the Stanley Cup. A Cup day is cool, but definitely not even on the level of a wedding or something.

Re: Hockey Media

From: (Anonymous)
But how sweet would it be to have the Cup AT your wedding??

He's going to have his either on his wedding day or his birthday imo.

Re: Hockey Media

Well, the wedding is planned for next summer, so... I hope he has it on his wedding day :P

This is so plaintive, love it.

Re: Things You Wouldn't Say Unanon

I feel like at this point "we're all always learning" is a platitude (one that I previously used to overlook screw ups like this!), because the problem is he hasn't shown in any way that he has learned or is trying to be better. He never backed down, or admitted he was wrong, or even listened, really. And those particular kind of screw ups don't happen as isolated incidents, they result from a larger failure to acknowledge that he has privilege in those conversations and also how that limits his viewpoint. He literally cited his status as a hockey player in the convo as giving him authority in the convo about Shaw, and "his understanding" and having read Wikipedia in the convo about blackface. (Also, this is probably massively unfair, but Scrivens also follows Richard Dawkins's whitepslain-y, mansplain-y twitter, so...)

Like, I found Crosby's and Toews's remarks re: LGBTQ in the lead up to Sochi pretty toothless, and in the case of some of Crosby's later remarks clearly intended to be supportive of the idea of an out player, ignorant to the point of being insulting. But, someone said elsewhere that it's admirable for Scrivens to be progressive given the cesspool environment of hockey -- shouldn't that logic allow guys like Toews and Crosby an ever lower bar? Scrivens has an Ivy League education and was at best a marginal NHL player. Also, fans of Toews and Crosby are going to worship them and defend them no matter what they say or do. Most people in the part of fandom I frequent have been roundly critical of both of them (even people who are massive fans of theirs). But fandom's interest in Scrivens isn't the same, and is founded mostly on him being an openly progressive hockey player, not a good/otherwise interesting one. Which is great, and uncommon, and important!!! But, like, surely we can talk about the importance of Scrivens' activism for hockey communities, without talking about him like he is a better, more admirable person than other people, for doing less than what other people do.

And I saw all this as someone who adored Scrivens, too! He tweeted something that in retrospect, was basically sort of acknowledging that systemic racism exists, and I was so happy about it! I loved him for it! And looking back, that makes me so embarrassed and uncomfortable. This fandom (including meme, and including me) has at times torn each other apart for things that, I won't call inconsequential because they aren't, but where people on both of the sides have already far surpassed any understanding that Scrivens has publicly shown. And the election has also made me think of how when white male players who get celebrated for being good people, that virtually never includes anything to do with race. I've seen NHLers march in Pride and publicly say explicitly supportive things about gay or queer folk. Haven't ever heard any of them say that Black Lives Matter, or anything even close to that.

Re: Hockey Media

I agree.

sa

And like someone said below, I'm not trying to pick on Scrivens or say people shouldn't like him or else they're bad people, too, or anything. I'm just talking about him because he's the only player I really thought that highly of, but I guess my actual point is more about how we talk about things hockey players do and how we talk about (white, male) hockey players themselves.
