Re: World Cup of Hockey

(Anonymous) 2016-08-19 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
listening back to Wysh waxing rhapsodic about old school ESPN hockey coverage got me curious about who was was working the tournament for ESPN this year.

https://www.nhl.com/news/espn-announcers-for-world-cup-of-hockey/c-281068544

announcing USA games (and only those I guess? not team NA?), semi finals and finals: Barry Melrose and Steve Levy

all other games: John Buccigross and Kevin Weekes, w/Leah Hextall wherever they let analysts in Toronto stand at ice level.

In studio analysis, Adnan Virk, Buccigross, Brett Hull, and Chris Chelios.

I tried looking for an announcement of the Canadian broadcast team - I know it's on Sportsnet for prelims and CBC for semifinals and finals, but either they haven't bothered announcing a team cause it's the usual people, or I just couldn't find it.

ESPN international is going to show the games in other English and Spanish-speaking countries, and again my level of interest wasn't sufficient to try to find out whether they will actually bother to find spanish language commentators or translators or what. Viasat has the games in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

Vesey to Rangers. Enjoy that one, Metro.

Not really surprised; apparently he rented a condo with the NY Hayes the other day.

I am weirdly surprised. Mostly because everything I've heard about the Rangers future is that it's not that bright??

Nah, it's better than a lot of people are giving credit for. Very strong forward corps and a stack of goalie prospects for once Lundqvist gets shaky, just poor defense. And if they jettison one of Girardi or Staal (buyout for the former in a year, trade for the latter) it'll get better fast.

Just glad it wasn't Chicago since that would have made the whole thing a discussion topic among Preds fans again and I was ok being over it.

Sucks for Jimmy Hayes he is getting a lot of hate.

BCBruins have post some inside information for sometime. He talked about the situation with Hamilton before he was traded. Makes me wonder how long Hayes is going to last with the Bruins next season.

What did he say!?!

Granted, I don't pay much attention to either team, but I've heard the Isles are more the team with looming stormclouds.

Because Tavares?? Or because they sort of in general seem like a ship without a rudder.

It wasn't even interesting. "In the sport I cover..." blah de blah a lot of the same qualities as Toews, leadership, whatever.

Like, here, fans of one niche sport. Let me make a reference to a totally unrelated niche sport, rather than just delivering the compliment to her game without the useless reference.

Later in the game he made a connection to Katie Ledecky re: dominance in the sport that at least made sense given the audience.

I felt a little bad for Kathryn Tappen getting thrown into the beach volleyball commentary, but at least she knew to stick to conversations or observations of the relevant athletes and their families.

DA but I think some of their high picks are at risk of not panning out, ie Strome, and they have goalie issues.

I wonder what percentage of women's water polo fans have even heard of Toews. I bet it's not high.

AskReddit, so who knows if this is real or not, but supposedly the sister of someone who went in the first round of the 2011 draft talking about how her relationship with her brother is incredibly distant. Kind of interesting.

That's about the opposite of surprising, tbh. Some of those guys are out of the house by 14, 16 at the latest.

I read more and she said she's Canadian and he's an AHL/NHL tweener. Trying to figure out who.

Twitter and wine led me to the Red Eings Snapxhat tonight. And j have the following things to say:

1. Dylan Larkin's ass is ~inspirational
2. I do not understand hockey players dedication to wearing those cheap ass plastic slipper/slide/not-flip flops things all damn day. In my world you wear those in the locker room until you put on the shoes you want to be seen wearing in public.

Well, that describes at least picks 16-17 and 23-26 from that draft, not that I know anything about who has siblings.

Also Jamie Oleksiak :p

I play in a league w/ a guy who is friends with Cullen from his days with the Ducks. According to him, Cullen was planning to retire after last year. I assume that fact + the pay raise + his chemistry w/ the Pens all contributed to him signing in Pittsburgh and not looking for more money somewhere else. This will probably be his last year for sure.

I stopped digging when I realized I was creeping on a very, very non-famous person's linkedin account and took a look at my life and my choices, but out of the dudes in that draft class about whom enough relevant information can be easily gathered, there's no one that fits all the details well.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

Like.... it's not Jamie Oleksiak.

Unless they're being very generous with NHL games played, I'm not who it might be.

Finnish documentary with english subtitles about off season training. Mostly about Mikko Rantanen and Patrik Laine. Might be useful for anyone who wants to learn about off season training I also learnt that Rantanen favours quality over quality and that Laine and Rantanen are way better at hockey than badminton.

I have such a hatereading boner for the recent big thing in Sid/Geno. The painful earnestness of it. Sid's ass. Hockey playing daughters and how much they love their parents. And now this? I refuse to believe there's no term for bisexual in Russian. Also it doesn't even succeed at being earnest, seeing as how that pan joke is cringeworthy on multiple levels.
