AskReddit, so who knows if this is real or not, but supposedly the sister of someone who went in the first round of the 2011 draft talking about how her relationship with her brother is incredibly distant. Kind of interesting.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

That's about the opposite of surprising, tbh. Some of those guys are out of the house by 14, 16 at the latest.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

I read more and she said she's Canadian and he's an AHL/NHL tweener. Trying to figure out who.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
Well, that describes at least picks 16-17 and 23-26 from that draft, not that I know anything about who has siblings.

Also Jamie Oleksiak :p

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

I stopped digging when I realized I was creeping on a very, very non-famous person's linkedin account and took a look at my life and my choices, but out of the dudes in that draft class about whom enough relevant information can be easily gathered, there's no one that fits all the details well.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

Like.... it's not Jamie Oleksiak.

Unless they're being very generous with NHL games played, I'm not who it might be.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

I like the joke about it being Penny (and she should be cleaning her medals, not on Reddit)

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
Are you Jamie Oleksiak? ;) That puts an interesting spin on the person complaining about him being called Jamieson in fic in the other thread.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
I'm pretty sure it's Zack Phillips.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
She also mentioned that he left home for private school, which would fit the other anon's Zack Phillips guess.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
He's not an NHL/AHL tweener, though, unless she misunderstood where he was being called up and sent down to...

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
Maybe if she's counting preseason?

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
That comment is gone, so I have no idea how it was phrased. But regardless of where he was playing irl, his contract was with the NHL team who waived him to the AHL team (who sent him down to the ECHL), so I don't think it would be in totally inaccurate. It's the NHL team who pays his salary.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
She said she doesn't follow hockey, so I wouldn't expect her to get it exactly right (and she didn't say "tweener"; that was that one anon's gloss). The fact that he got drafted by, signed with, attended camps for, and kept getting sent down from an NHL team could look a lot like bouncing between the NHL and the minors even if he never played a single game, from an outsider's perspective.

But it's definitely him. He left home in the eighth grade to go to private school in the US and has a sister who's a year younger, worked at Wal-Mart, and once gave an interview to a local paper about the hardships hockey has caused for her family, including a wistful bit about missing the closeness she had with her brother before hockey took over.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

I mean, he doesn't sound like a bad guy, overall. He's playing in Sweden next season, so it seems like he's given up on the NHL for now.

Apparently the content of the comment has since been edited out.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

Ugh. I makes me so sad that people do this to "famous" people. Like if your own sister is going to go on Reddit and say that you're not close to your family and you're really superficial and you aren't responsible enough to unpack your own suitcases - how on earth do you ever trust anyone.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
I mean, that's probably the cost of having your sister unpack your suitcases for you. She'll complain about it on the internet. She clearly didn't mean for this to reflect back onto him, even if it was pretty naive of her to think people wouldn't go sleuthing.

Re: Random Hockey Stuff

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, she clearly thought better of it pretty quickly, but god knows I've complained about my own family on the internet in greater detail - they're just significantly less googleable so it matters less.
